Oh, I agree. I just think having more age appropriate choices for other characters would have been nice too.
Spock and Uhura seem to be roughly the right ages for the time the show is set. But Kirk is too old (the actor hides it well, lucky bastard) and Scotty far too young.
And McCoy makes no sense if cast too young given the nature of his personality, relationship to Kirk, etc. So, like you, I would prefer to go older as opposed to too young, like they did with Scotty.
I think it’s the inconsistency that bugs me.

Scotty should be too though.
In TOS, he’s clearly 10 years older than Kirk. In SNW it looks like it’s the opposite!
And, to the extent that age of the actor implies the age of the character, Kelly and Doohan were about the same age.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. He always looked a bit awkward in the TNG uniform. But looked very natural in the early DS9 uniform.
The production explanation is probably just that non-main characters got uniforms that fit “well enough” and not one specifically made for them.

I agree about the tone… but I also think Trek is often at its best when it’s not taking itself too seriously.
There is a line though.

In this case… not so much.

Related question based on the image for the original post… Is the Vanguard series good? I grew up reading my dad’s collection of TOS novels and I have always thought that era is f Trek translated well to a novel format.

- Comment on What are the best single episodes to show people new to Trek? 5 months ago:
I think it does a good job of showing the Star Trek approach to science fiction.
You have a human on the planet interacting with an unusual alien. There is some action, but the primary problem of the episode is not solved by violence. The audience is taken along with Picard in the process of figuring out communication with the alien captain.
Its main weakness is that you don’t get much ship-based stuff in this particular episode. There is a little, but…

It’s not just a shitty disease…. It’s a shitty disease that the Social Security Administration really, REALLY does not like to pay out disability for. Mostly because, unless something has changed recently, it’s hard to prove that you actually have it because it defies easily quantifiable medical testing, among other things.
