  Wehraboos should also understand that Nazi Germany is overrated. Most people don’t realise that the Nazis were extremely incompetent in handling the economy, so much so that Germany at the time was on the brink of another economic collapse just before Hitler invaded Poland. The economic collapse was held at bay for as long possible due to Nazis plundering the nations they conquered. But during peace time, they are absolutely idiots. If there had been no war, Nazi Germany would have already collapsed. That’s why my gripe with alternative history of Nazis winning is of it being rich. But in reality they had runaway government spending in just few years they had been in power.

  When it left port the crew wasn’t fully trained, it wasn’t fully equipped and it had some technical problems. If I remember correctly the fire control was too close to one of the main batteries and got damaged with the first salvo.

  From what I remember from binging videos a few years ago, the whole thing with the Bismark was that if it got to the Atlantic, it would wreck shipping and be much much harder to find and sink, so they had to really push to get it before. I might be completely wrong though.

    This is it. They had to get it before it was in open ocean. This is pre-radar and there would be no aerial observations. It would have to be found by visual contact and coordination would be by radio.

      On the contrary, they had radar. That’s how they found Bismarck: Swordfish with ASV II sets.

    tl;dr; Nazi Germany built a battleship that they wanted to use to harass Allied shipping in the Atlantic. It gets glazed by Wehraboos (militaria fans of Nazi equipment) because it sank one of the Royal Navy’s capital ships. Subsequently, the Bismarck was hunted down and sunk because the Royal Navy hates it when their ships are sunk. Nazi Germany would not be able to contest the ocean with its surface fleet for the rest of the war.
