Yay! Love to see Lemmy promoted.
I think its great they are promoting Lemmy but I think the notes are unneeded. Tell people Lemmy is great, give them a recommended instance to sign up on, and stop selling. They can learn about the rest after theyve gotten their lemmylegs underneath them.
Give them 5 extra paragraphs of caveats and people will think they are more confused than they are. I ended up on squabbles for two months after the reddit exodus because everytime Lemmy was brought up it was with a massive text wall or that one infocomic. Its free, theres no ads, and no one person owns it - thats really all you need to know to get started.
I think the first note was fine. It’s definitely going to be a spot of confusion for a lot of people. I agree that the rest were largely unnecessary though.
Hehe, “lemmylegs”. That’s kinda cute :D
Somewhat related: do we have a more up-to-date mapping between reddit <-> lemmy ?
sub.rehab is not accepting new links, redditmigration is recommending some instances that have been abandoned or closed, etc. I have now over 4000 subreddits at portal.alien.top and only mapped ~150 of them. If none of these mapping projects are going to be maintained, perhaps I should a similar functionality to fediverser itself?
Great news!
I feel like the main missing detail is defederation but I also feel like that would confuse people not familiar with how federation works.
just more of reddit shooting off its own dick for that sweet sweet IPO
I'd suggest Mastodon to anyone looking for a new social media platform to join, but I can't suggest Lemmy/KBIN as they don't have legitimate blocking in place, as theirs is simply the same bullshit Reddit like "masking" where you can no longer see who you blocked, but they can still see, and reply to whatever it is you post, which of course is rife from abuse from the people you want to distance yourself the most from. Until there's legitimate, you no longer exist, blocking on Lemmy/KBIN I would suggest anyone else use them. (to say nothing of all the errors in KBIN from notifications, to blocking, to posting, to seeing comments, the list stretches endlessly)
My problem with mastodon is the same one I have with Twitter. It’s very easy to get up and running. You can get a feed filled with nonsense to read but if you’re actually interested in any topic, it’s really hard to get a feed that matches your interest.
That’s why I could never get into Twitter and now Mastodon. I don’t give a shit about who posts, I only give a shit about the topic. I don’t want to follow people. I want to follow topics. And hashtags just don’t cut it.
Yeah, Mastodon is great for following people, but not wonderful for topics. I hope that Lemmy can mature to the point where it has a greater diversity of communities.
Yeah, I kind of liken it to a one hit wonder because I get bored on it easily. On twitter, there used to be people who posted on reddit the really viral or interesting stuff. Twitter sucks now, bluesky won’t let you read their tweets and I refuse to use threads. I guess mastodon it is about once a month.
it took them a bit
Did they note lemmy is run by tankies? Of course not 🤠
mabe because Lemmy isnt run by one single group

I knew mastadon was the largest, but I didn’t realize how much larger it is. Mastadon is 78% of the fediverse users, while lemmy is third place at 3.3%. Misskey is second place with roughly double lemmy’s users. Looks like it’s a jp only thing.
