- Comment on The FTC isn’t too happy with Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard layoffs 9 months ago:
There's a book called The Media Monopoly that details how all of the media companies in the world have consolidated to just a handful of mega corps and the book had to be republished 5 times since the 80s because every few years the number keeps shrinking dramatically. The author later released a brand new book called The New Media Monopoly which is essentially the 7th edition of the original book and at this point we're in a fucked up late stage version of the problem he originally detailed.

The actual fuck did they think was gonna happen? Literally everyone saw this coming except the FTC somehow I guess.

Ok but will this run on my TI-83? It's a + model.
- Comment on Disney+ has started cracking down on password sharing in the US 9 months ago:
I think the next thing they're gonna do is go after people who sub for a month and then unsub. Probably by charging a good bit more for month-to-month than paying annually.
- Comment on Disney+ has started cracking down on password sharing in the US 9 months ago:
Password crackdown aside, I don't really get the appeal of the service unless you have kids or an abnormally large boner for Star Wars and MCU

Please elaborate.
- Comment on Microsoft revives aggressive Windows 11 upgrade campaign with intrusive popups for Windows 10 users 9 months ago:
Yeah for sure, this just happens to be something that would particularly fucking infuriate me and I'm glad I don't have to deal with it.

Say what you will about Apple but I don't have to put up with this insane shit at least on their computers.
- Comment on Russia's GPS jamming puts aviation, shipping at additional risk as well | News | ERR 9 months ago:
Pretty interesting. I'm gonna take a wild guess that most of the low level (green) jamming is just plain old electromagnetic interference?
Really curious to know what's going on over Poland. Found this article talking about it. Seems to think Russia is responsible which I suppose isn't a surprise.

It sounds annoying as fuck. I hate when my friends send audio messages in messaging apps.
- Comment on What Meta’s Fediverse Plans Mean for Threads Users 9 months ago:
Funny thing is that the mainstream threads audience would probably do more harm to the mastodon ecosystem by orders of magnitude.
There is a big cultural disconnect. I’m active in both and they are very different communities by and large.

Absolutely spot on teardown of this joke article.

They really have just given up on being a good search engine at this point huh?

Huh good to know. Thanks for the details!

Really? I've heard it kinda sucks these days. I used to use it years back though and am a big Firefox supporter.
- Comment on Is the bot/troll situation getting worse? 9 months ago:
Yep I remember this pattern of behavior distinctly from last time.
One of the big ones that sticks out is you start seeing a lot of people claiming to be democrats or left aligned showing up all of a sudden and being big time concern trolls and talking about sitting out the election and/or claiming that there's no difference between voting democrat or republican, which is demonstrably absolute horse shit.
And just a lot of added vitriol. It seems like even politically unrelated discussions get meaner and more argumentative. I expect it's just gonna get worse as we get closer to November. It's only the beginning February. Ugh.
- Comment on Is the bot/troll situation getting worse? 9 months ago:
Yeah I've encountered a few accounts lately who either have mental health issues or are bots designs to stir discord. Their entire posting history is divisive shit stirring.
Funny how every 4 years the internet gets markedly nastier. I wonder why???

- Comment on YSK: Indeed and other job sites are saturated with scams 9 months ago:
The internet as a whole is just absolutely overrun with bots and scammy bullshit. It's gotten way out of hand and AI is only making it worse.

Yeah ditto, been working fine for me
- Comment on People are worried that AI will take everyone’s jobs. We’ve been here before. 9 months ago:
I am surprised how many people don’t see where it’s going and hand wave away the issue. It’s going to become a lot more advanced than it already is in just a few years. This is an entirely different situation than we’ve ever experienced.
- Comment on It’s Surprisingly Easy to Live Without an Amazon Prime Subscription 9 months ago:
In the US it’s basically the everything store with fairly competitive pricing and very fast shipping. It’s very convenient if nothing else. The company is still evil tho.
- Comment on It’s Surprisingly Easy to Live Without an Amazon Prime Subscription 9 months ago:
Prime video just isn’t all that good and it sounds like ads are coming and shipping is still free over like $25.
Only reason to have prime is if you also have their credit card and order a decent amount of stuff there and/or shop at whole foods a lot for the 5% back. Otherwise it does add up at all.
- Comment on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not 9 months ago:
Based on the amount of screen time zoomers are reporting (saw some article about it recently and it was insane), I think there's a boatload of people who are glued to devices and not being present.
I'm a good bit older than that and I've definitely been making an effort to get off my phone. I took all the social apps off about 3-4 months ago and it's been a big improvement. Gonna keep finding ways to unplug. I need to stop posting here during the day so much honestly. I'd probably get a lot more work done.
- Comment on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not 9 months ago:
Agreed on that, it's a weird dichotomy. I think in a way the internet as a whole has had that effect on people.
Connections in real life don't feel a deep as I remember them being in the past and its so often you see a group of people out to dinner or drinks together staring at their phones. Meanwhile I have a lot of pretty decent connections online with people I've never met in person or maybe only once or twice.
- Comment on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not 9 months ago:
Aluminum is cool but they really should have considered plastic or something and also scrapped that outer screen. The tradeoffs in both weight and battery life make no sense.
- Comment on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it’s not 9 months ago:
Yes and no. I’ve used a Quest to watch movies in a theater with different people from around the world and it was a very social experience. I’ve also attended a few support group meetings for dealing with loss in VR and that was honestly a really positive experience.
- Comment on Universal Music says that it will pull its song catalog from TikTok tomorrow at midnight, as the companies are unable to reach a deal on rights. Huge implications. 9 months ago:
God it would be great for a huge back catalog of tiktok videos to just be lame tweens dancing in silence.
- Comment on Own a Roku TV or streaming device? You're about to see a lot more ads on your home screen 9 months ago:
Yeah it probably is in terms of an off the shelf, purpose built option with no tinkering. They're pretty snappy as well. Decent hardware in there it seems.
We have an ATV but our wireless network is kinda shit and we kept having connectivity issues between the ATV and the Plex server we were running on the Mini so we just went all in on running the Mini as the media player and Plex server in one to avoid it. Bonus was that we now have a very capable console game emulator hooked up to the TV too.
It's a bit overkill but I will say as a server the new apple silicon minis are great. Zero fan noise ever and they sip electricity and run really cool.
