  Explanation For Those Wondering: US President Garfield was the victim of an assassination attempt in 1881 AD. The bullet did not immediately kill him - in fact, he was in relatively good spirits about his chances over the coming weeks, though the danger was considered serious.

  … the incompetent doctors who operated on him worsened the wound, caused an infection, and ensured the assassin’s bullet did its job of killing President Garfield.

  He would pass away on a Monday.
