For me it was buying a vape, using it for a bit, and ultimately being dissatisfied with that it tasted nothing like the real thing and didn’t have the same experience.
Eventually as my sense of smell and taste came back, I was just straight up disgusted with how awful all my clothing, and living space smelled. Took every piece of clothing I had to the laundromat, clean or not, and washed everything, then deep cleaned the place and let everything air out as much as possible.
Getting my sense of taste back was really interesting. I vividly remember going to a restaurant and ordering a steak and taking a bite and it was the most delicious thing I’d ever eaten. It was like holy shit is steak always supposed to taste this good? On the flip side, when I’d go to my boss’s place he’d always stock Busch beer. I remember taking one when offered, like usual, taking a sip and spitting it out because it was so god awful tasting. It was like how the hell did I ever drink this?
I did lapse back to smoking like once a year for a few weeks (usually around the 4th of July) for a couple years after, and smoked cigars occasionally, but that stopped eventually.
Nowadays I really can’t stand the smell of cigarettes. Like I gotta be far away from it.

Must warn people against trying vapes as a tool to quit smoking, though. It has the same if not worse health risks in addition to much less research about any long-standing effects.
If the standard nicotine patch approach does not work, please consult with a proper doctor.

I believe it. Seen my mom try it 6 times. It never held more than 3-4 months. Soon she’ll retire, and she’s still smoking.
My dad tried less often, and also didn’t succeed. Recently he switched to one of those tobacco heater things.
At least I had two bad examples from a young age, and never started.

The main problem imo is how easy it is to buy. Imagine if they had coke for sale at the gas station. It’s impossible to quit if you have an easy at hand opportunity to buy more 4 times a day.

I have an irritatingly strong sense of smell but as long as I’m not wearing a respirator I can smell smokers from a kinda freakish distance and none could ever sneak up on me. Me saying “morning paul” the moment he enters the room while wearing a sleeping eye mask and lazing on the break room sofa weirded out the others for some time. I can still smell the mixture of knockoff marlboro and mint superslims when I close my eyes.
It also doesn’t matter how hot someone is, once they are in scent range my brain replaces what my eyes are seeing with one of those smoke room podium type ash trays. Its just a side effect of super nose powers.

I was prepared to hate it but after the first episode, I’m interested.
Smoking is absolutely disgusting. And watching her suffer is hilarious.
