I’m really glad I met my memory needs last year. The price is completely unjustifiable. AI will blow over (revert to reasonable expectations) and when it does, hopefully there will be something left of the market so that we still have companies left to sell us RAM.
An entire PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory, even after a discount — simple memory kit jumps to $600 due to DRAM shortage, and it's expected to get worse into 2026

I’m sad I chose to wait. Linux kernel 6.15 finally fixed my GPU but I got no RAM to run it with

It’s certainly not your fault. Nobody could have been certain prices would explode this much.

I mean, memory companies are like shovel sellers in a gold rush. They should be fine and dandy.

Yeah, I still can’t quite believe that I got 2x32 of 6400CL32 for $135 late last year. I had ordered 6000CL30 for $190, but it was taking a long time to ship, and then I saw the deal and cancelled the old order. Used up all my luck for this decade.

I wonder how long I can keep going with my Ryzen 5 3600, 1660 Super and 16GB of RAM… 🤔
Atherel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 days ago
Depends on your needs and resolution. You can always upgrade CPU to a Ryzen 5700x3d and the GPU to something like a rx6000 or rtx4000 series and get a big boost. No nees do go all in with newest hardware.

I mean the only thing in recent years that performed like utter shit was Stalker 2. And I mean… They made that game in the middle of a war so I have to cut them a little slack. 🤷♂️

FX-8350 and 1070. But I got 32GB of DDR3…I think, I don’t even remember what I put in here in 2016

Memory prices have jumped a lot recently. Anecdotally, I bought some RAM off a website almost exactly half a year ago. Back then the price was 14 euro, now it is 41 euro, and the product I bought is still the cheapest for 8GB SO-DIMM 3.2GHz on the website.
Granted, there are two other possible reasons:
- It could have been a good offer back then.
- It is black friday tomorrow, so they might need a high price now to put it on “sale” tomorrow.

Great timing of two of my DDR4 RAM modules to die - I have never seen more errors in memtest+
Luckily they are still under warranty but the vendor simply gave a refund without any option to get a replacement…

When the bubble pops on ai, will there then be all those parts up for offer?
PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 3 days ago
If it’s anything like the crypto bubble from a couple years ago, then yeah. eBay should be flooded with used RAM and GPUs.

I got 64GB (kit of 2) ddr4 for 150€ In January, now it is almost 400€ or more. I thought of buying another kit of 64 later to max out my mobo to 128GB and now I’m totally kicking myself for not going for 128GB straight away. And last month it got announced they no longer will make ddr4 so I’m out of luck anyway now even if prices stabilize.
As for why I need that much ram, I’m a tab hoarder and like to run VMs
BingBong@sh.itjust.works 3 days ago
A couple months ago I decides to buy another set of RAM to get up to 64 GB on a whim. So damn glad I decided to treat myself for once, no way I’d do it now.

Never thought I’d have to time the market to buy my next laptop, but here we are.
SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 days ago
In theory laptops and assembled PCs should lag behind the parts market, so there might still be time.

Damn I am so happy I upgraded when I did, had the same computer for upwards of a decade before finally upgrading a couple years ago, got my 7900xt with 20gb vram for like 650 and it doubled in price over a couple months(it’s back down now but whatevs), 32gb ddr5 ram for like nothing compared to these current prices lmao, I should hopefully be good for another decade

PCMasterrace though, amirite?
Xella@lemmy.world 3 days ago
What? You can’t code on a PS5 so… 🤦♀️
MourningDove@lemmy.zip 2 days ago
What? You don’t need 64GB of ram to code so… 🤦♂️

Fucking sucks. Literally just started building a computer for my husband. We already bought the case, motherboard, PSU, HD, and CPU… All that’s left is GPU and RAM 😭 fuckin half way ass done computer now on the verge of never being built. At least it’s pretty. purplePc
Cort@lemmy.world 3 days ago
At least the AMD chips have an integrated GPU so with some ram you could have a basic computer.
Xella@lemmy.world 3 days ago
It’s the RAM that’s extremely expensive 😭

Can confirm, I’m running 3x 4K monitors with Ryzen 9900X easily. I’m not into gaming, though.
SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I’d try seeing if the second-hand market is still behind on the pricing.
Psythik@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Shit like this is why I don’t purchase until I can afford the entire build. Time goes by faster than you think. It would sick to get stuck with a PC that’s already obsolete before you get the funds together to finish it.
If I were you, I’d return everything while you still can, then set aside the money until you can afford tje complete build. Luckily for you you just started, so the return window for everything will still be open for everything.
Consider this a lesson learned and good luck with your eventual build!
