Already have the rack and it hosts most of my items (router, switch, raspberry pi rack, NAS, PS3 apple TV). Honestly other than the raspberry pi rack and the router, the rest are just using shelves anyways. I need to find a good, non-bulky way to take the enclosure fan and switch it on when temps get above a set point. What I’ve done in the past with an arduino is way too bulky.
I love your idea and its funny you mention the mini PCs and thin clients. As I look at prices I’m more and more leaning towards just another shelf and using mini PCs.

I’m trying to find a reasonably priced used rack mount computer to move all my containers to. I have a rack in my house but measuring the depth between posts only gets me around 17.5". Recently deployed paperless-ngx and decided it would be too much to add onto my poor little NAS which hosts everything else so its deployed on my main computer and I want to avoid that strategy.
Challenge is that being new to rack servers and all of this (the NAS was a great intro box) I’ve got a large learning curve ahead of me.

The last episode totally changed what I was expecting as the trajectory on this one. Hoping I can find time soon to watch this one!

Appreciate everyone’s help. What I ended up doing was moving to porkbun as I (a) saved money with some of the whois privacy items, (b) got free SSL certificates, and © it worked with the automated certbot tie in with Nginx-Prox-Manager. I did confirm I could manually load certs into Nginx but have very limited time at the moment and this seemed like a straightforward path.
Certainly the proposals for self-hosted DNS servers are interesting and something I may experiment with in the future but times limited at the moment. Now I’m just working out why Jellyfin and Photoprism work perfectly but homebox doesn’t want to work with the domain name. Another round of learning begins!

If you are talking about the steps where wolfgang adds a lets encrypt cert, bluehost is not a recognized DNS provider. If you are talking something else could you provide some additional detail please?

My internal network is blocked off from the internet and I’m not actually planning to enable tailscale for VPN in (my understanding of its purpose). This is really just so I can use sub domains like ‘homebox.mydomain.space’ to access and get a registered SSL certificate to switch all internal over. I’m not using the duckdns that Wolfgang did because I already registered a good custom domain that I use for my e-mail.

One time I finished the Namek arc in DBZ.
Just kidding, no one could ever do that.

It was tricky to get it to snap into place cleanly and I had to jostle some of the monitor wires into place while installing. The instructions did note that this was a common challenge point and so I was prepared for moving the wires. Once installed it’s good quality.

Framework 13 DIY edition. I’ve been quite happy so far and so has she. Configuring it was trivial and the one issue I ran into (setting up backups) was due to my not being familiar with fedora and KDE. Build quality is good, the bezel was the only part that gave me pause. She doesn’t use it a ton so it’s likely any minor nagging quirks will take a while to tease out.

Bought my wife a framework laptop, slapped fedora on it and have been helping her make the switch. So far so good other than Obsidian not working the same as OneNote.

I tossed Mint on a VM briefly and really disliked it. Specifically finding the terminal was painful. Did they bury it pretty deep or did I just overlook it?
