I’m trying to convince my wife that she doesn’t need to scrub the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

My wife will scrub the dishes, then put them in the dishwasher, and not start it because it’s not completely full.
They’re already so clean, the next person in the kitchen has a very difficult time telling if it has been run or not. JUST too dirty to eat from again, but also too clean to see at a glance. So annoying. I even got one of those clean/dirty magnets so we can signal to everyone, but then people forget to switch it.

Our dishwasher has a bright ass white LED when it’s done and clean. As long as you don’t open the door it’s lit up like the Lighthouse of Alexandria. If you’re opening the door, you need to just empty it. Even with that we have a magnet that says “Hella Clean” on one side and “Dirty AF” on the other, makes people actually want to swap it around since it’s not just a basic boring ass dirty/clean sign.

Good luck, I’ve not been successful here yet.

I’m going to keep scrubbing them for two reasons. Dishwashers suck at getting stuck food off, and I’m the one that has to clean the filter out.

I got the feeling that claim (what’s the claim?) and proof could fit into a few sentences. Why 40 minutes of video? That title is way too clickbaity for my liking. And I don’t fear to miss out on essential dishwasher pod info. ;) No thanks.

You must be brand new to Alec’s videos.

To elaborate:
A TC video usually serves two purposes. The first is to provide information that is interesting and sometimes even useful.
But the other is to detail the learning process and to glance down a few rabbit holes along the way.
And the Dishwasher Saga has the bonus of being both an incredibly snarky man proving the internet wrong AND being some of his most profitable videos.
One of his best videos that more or less explains this is when he did a “live” demo of… just using google to identify and repair a radio. It is deeply fun and rapidly turns into a discussion of why it is good to curate your own entertainment rather than relying totally on algorithms.

The hubris to think you don’t need to know about how your dishwasher works… I too was once blind, this man showed me the light. Praise be.

Furthermore, the amount of soap needed for a wash can vary, but pods provide only one amount. Powder or liquid soaps can be portioned appropriately.

I feel like you watched the video differently than I did because his whole point was about the prewash and the wash. The fact that the main washes where the pod gets dumped in, not during the pre wash for the for 15 minutes, which is his trying to be using powdered soap.
Or at least that was the first half of the video. The second half was about heat and wash cycles.

See? That wasn’t so hard.

It’s like watching a great serial sitcom several years in. None of the jokes are funny because you’re missing out on why it’s funny. Same here, go back to some early stuff and maybe it’ll change your mind. But this one is pretty meta for a series he’s been on that I for one love.
markz@suppo.fi 1 week ago
It’s a follow up to series, in that context I think the title is fine.
Why 40 minutes of video?
These tend to go through rabbit holes in detail.
And I don’t fear to miss out on essential dishwasher pod info.
Spending a minute reading a tl;dr might just get you cleaner dishes while saving money.
Who wants to know how the world around them works anyway?

A dishwasher has two major cycles that are relevant to dish soap. One is the I’ll show about 15 minutes. And the there is the main wash, which is like an hour plus depending. If you don’t use powdered dish soap and split it up then you’re missing the advantage of the prewash.
Second half is focused on the effect of heat and why you should drain your water line of cold water through your faucet before you start your dishwasher. By doing that, you increase the heat and you increase the longevity of that heat on is that are in your dishwasher. It’s worth noting that heat is good for dishwashing liquid both because it helps the enzyme break down and also probably breaks down with the food material at some cases.
Beyond that, he was very enthusiastic about his new soap, which he helped create, and rightfully so. Double blind test, it came out very well against premium pods, and he was able to prove his whole point about pods not being useful in a prewash.

I’m going to buy some powder detergent today.

Ever since Alec posted the dishwasher video, I switched to the powder detergent and always add the pre-wash. Amazing results. I felt I’ve been lied to my whole life about dishwashers.

Same and same! The man has changed my life in mild but appreciable ways.
