Tell me you don’t understand sample selection bias without saying you don’t understand sample selection bias.

I think that’s the point

It’s time to introduce everyone to the concept of Culture bound syndrome
fossilesque@mander.xyz 2 months ago
Good link, thx.
Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 2 months ago
My favorite part:
Some culture-bound syndromes appear with similar features in several cultures, but with locally specific traits, such as penis panics.

Obviously it’s because people in Africa and south America don’t have access to paracetamol.

New Zealand very smart, just skip Autism altogether.
marcos@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Many diseases seem to not exist in New Zealand.

They banned them. You want to fix a problem? ban it.

Yeah if this instance is going to become a place to post disinformation, I’m out. I came here to escape reddit, not double down on its worst aspects.
fossilesque@mander.xyz 2 months ago
It’s a place to deconstruct disinformation.

Calm down, you’re in a memes channel, and OP here posts science memes all the time. I’m very sure this is satirical
notsosure@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
Just block the idiots.
AugustWest@lemmy.world 2 months ago
If you block OP, you have basically left the community, as OP is this community. Either way, I’m fairly certain OP is posting this as in “look at how dumb this is.” It’s a science memes community.
bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 2 months ago
Like the idiots who don’t understand sarcasm?
bonedaddy@mander.xyz 2 months ago
I for one upvoted this post because it is stupid.

Autism is caused by (squints) the Welsh.
fossilesque@mander.xyz 2 months ago
They catch it from the sheep.
BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 2 months ago
'splains why the Kiwis aren’t even on the map: the whole country got vaporized when they reached critical autism concentration.

damn sorry for downvotes OP, I thought it was pretty funny

Tough crowd. ヘ(^_^)

Poe’s Law. Without a clear indicator, a lot of people took it as OP believing this.
QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
OP added the description after like an hour, people have kept downvoting after it was added
Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Let’s play Pick the Cognitive Biases. Not just in the picture, but in the comments and the reasons people downvoted this.
Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 2 months ago
If you see this comment, it could be interesting to get an idea of how many people:
a) Thought OP posted this in like a “Look at how dumb this is” way, or,
b) Thought OP agreed with the idea presented in the image.
I think this might have to do with communication climates (I am so far from an expert in anything) and how a climate of disagreement with peers and prevalent media can foster a climate of disagreement. In other words, if surrounded by stupid people with stupid ideas it’s easy to assume the next stupid idea has come from a stupid person.

Tylenol is just really popular in the US
very_well_lost@lemmy.world 2 months ago
The US should just switch to paracetamol. Problem solved!
anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 months ago
this is what happens when you discard the confidence data
Zerush@lemmy.ml 2 months ago
Anyway, fact is that the US ranks in the place 33 in the average IQ level, maybe saved by the chinese and corean scientifics working in the MIT

This, but also isn’t that how genetics works? You’re not going to see a native Chihuahua thriving in the arctic.
(But it’s probably something about what countries actually do testing, etc. )

countries will higher autism rates have better healthcare… aka higher rates of accurate diagnosis….
also, lower rates of autistic kids being killed due to inconvenience.
DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 2 months ago
Well when you look at Europe you see that the countries that make up the majority of the countries that colonized America have the higher autism rates too
