There’s no need to download a new web browser
That banner should be illegal.
it used to be for some time
Is there even any advantage of using Chrome instead of Edge in 2023? They’re basically the same since both use Chromium and are ridden with trackers and telemetry
The advantage is that you get to sell your data to Google instead of Microsoft, yay!
In the end the big tech corpos are circle jerking our data anyways unless you go 100% tech free and even then I wouldn’t be surprised if they set-up a profile of you from phones in your proximity.
Both browsers are equally capable of doing their primary job, which is to download Firefox.
At work we have both, Edge and Chrome, and there actually are minor differences (that might well result from differences in the pushed settings, though). Like, when using our ticketing system, Edge loses the connection to the server after a period of inactivity and Chrome doesn’t. Also, Chrome seems to be a little faster with script processing (subjectively, have never measured…). But otherwise, they’re basically the same, just as you said.
Use Chromium instead.
Go firefox 🥺
Chrome does it too yet i only see people complain when edge does it. Why?
Because Edge is the default browser on the most widespread operating system. If you’re using Chrome, you very likely already switched once and are better informed than someone encountering the message on Edge.
Whether you use Microsoft spyware or Google spyware, I wouldn’t really consider either choice as “better informed” user. If you want debloated chromium… you can use chromium. Then there is Firefox, Brave, and bunch more as privacy oriented.
And the second most widespread OS (ChromeOS) has Chrome as the default browser.
Chrome have literally a monopoly what are you talking about ? Out of the two, edge (chrome but Microsoft Spyware instead of Google) is better just for the AI stuff. People who are used to chrome just default it install it because for some reason they think transferring their bookmarks and password is some impossible magic. That being said, use Firefox instead.
More fun to hate Microsoft, though I personally do not like chrome as a browser
Why would anyone even use chrome? At least use brave that blocks all the scam ads. Better to use Firefox for sure
It’s an office computer. More or less it is a requirement.
I personally use firefox.
Brave sells your data.
@silverbax @technology @hikarulsi i ve heard this. Any links about it??
This is why I download Firefox instead
There’s only one website I’ve ever visited on IE, Edge, Safari, Chrome and it’s getfirefox.com
Also ninite. Does that and more as a first step
I always typed “mozilla.org/firefox”. Fortunately I use another operating system now which ships with Firefox installed
Theres 1 popup on screen, its the cookies declaration that basically every website has and is completely unrelated to your search.
Basically every post like this I’ve seen on Lemmy has been shit similar to this lol. It’s too easy to discredit, I don’t understand how people think it’s a useful argument to make.
Pretty terrible, yes, but with all the bullshit Google is pulling with Chrome, like the Web Integrity stuff, I don’t really mind. It’s assholes vs assholes.
Yeah, we just let them fight like monkeys. Because what chrome does i double down on never using chrome ( or chromium based ) browsers.
Sure, but they are throwing shit in my yard.
Edge is just chrome, if google supports web integrity it doesn’t matter who doesn’t, whatever google decides to do is automatically the standard since chrome is 3/4 of all web browsers. It’s literally the Microsoft IE thing again.
Open source software is supposed to have a built-in safety net, forking. The issue is that people are most often overly reluctant to actually fork projects when they go to shit (especially if they do so by boiling the frog method), or it gets forked, they rarely really move to the newer forked project and instead keep putting up with the evil old version.
How is this shit allowed? It’s so blatant.
Also, just use Firefox. [Faster than chrome]wonderfulengineering.com/firefox-has-outperformed…](wonderfulengineering.com/firefox-has-outperformed…) these days anyway, and is officially opposing google’s drm garbage.
Agreed, but it’s sometimes nice to have a couple/few browser options in case your main one shits out on a website or just starts behaving weirdly.
Firefox masterrace🦊
To be fair, the cookie banner is unrelated and a one time thing.
You should see the fucking popups from Google when using edge. Sucks so bad.
Tbh if you use Google (or YouTube) for the first time the cookie consent popup also takes up the entire screen
Right. This post is disingenuous because most users hit that cookie consent prompt on the previous search screen.
Granted, the top begging prompt is ridiculous on its own.
How dare [browser by massive corporation that sells my data for money] make it hard for me to download [browser by massive corporation that sells my data for money]! I will never understand why people still like Chrome.
The second one is a legally mandatory prompt regarding accepting cookies
It is not mandatory if your site only uses cookies that are technically necessary. One only has to display a prompt for cookies that go beyond that, i. e. tracking cookies.
Iturbide you don’t use tracking cookies, then you’re not required to display the prompt, soooooo
It is suspiciously perfect size.
If you think this is desperate you should try searching for Google through Bing.
is edge even that bad compared to chrome?
Not really. Speaking from experience, because it comes with Citrix images and it’s already integrated with necessary logins by admins so I usually stick to it. It’s quite alright for normal use. Has some stuff that Chrome doesn’t, like vertical tabs and webpage snapshots.
The vertical tabs, performance and integration are the things that keep me from enjoying other browsers.
It definitely is way better than it used to be years ago when it was just a internet expl🤮rer rebrand.
Edge is Chrome, it’s built in Chromium. MS then adds on top of that to make it work (well) with their various products and platforms. If you run a corporate IT environment of any size, Edge is very good.
The chromium edge started of fantastic actually, was faster than chrome, less bloated and had some nice extra features. Then after being properly released it slowly started adding all the bullshit and now its a bloated mess. Just use Firefox or a derivative.
“There’s no need to download a new web browser” Fuck. The level of insecurity
so pathetic. many people download Chrome or firefox add their browser on their first time on an Windows. it’s completely automatic these days in their brain. these people still get even more convinced of their opinion by this interception
I mean they aren’t wrong, its basically the same shitty browser anyway.
linux 🫰🫰🫰
Search for Linux mint instead
It doesn’t happen when I search for Links2 though. I wonder why…

No need to open a web browser to install another one on Windows 10 and 11.
All one has to do is open a terminal, type
winget install Mozilla.Firefox
and hit Enter. ;)Pro tip: To update all software on a Windows computer you can type
winget upgrade --all
and hit Enter (especially useful for computers from family or friends with LibreOffice or Java versions from the stone age …).fatalError@kbin.social 1 year ago
wow, for a seconds I thought you were mocking windows for not having some central software repo like linux uses apt-get, but it actually works o.O
TIL winget is a thing.
linuxisfun@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Haha, glad to hear that you discovered
winget
through my post!It was, in my opinion, long overdue for Microsoft to introduce a package manager for Windows, but now that it is there, you can actually use it for all kinds of useful stuff. E. g. I would, if I was using Windows, create a PowerShell script to install my software all at once for whenever I reinstall my computer. This makes reinstalling a lot faster and I have documentation about the programs I had installed before. ;)

Upgrade all, wow. I knew about Winget install, but this is so good!! Thanks for the advice 😁
StrawberryPigtails@lemmy.astaluk.icu 1 year ago
I’ll be damned… Did not know that existed. I’ve never used the Windows store and it still found updates for most of what I have installed.
Thanks!

TIL. Running the upgrade all just now and it's a blessing
Tippon@lemmy.world 1 year ago
This is why I’ll never use Windows, it’s just too complicated for the average person. Imagine having to enter commands into the command line just to upgrade your computer, that’s way beyond most people.
I’d rather just stick with Mint with its GUI and automatic updates 😉

Love it for libreoffice since getting auto update will likely take a decade
