… for now. They’ve already replaced the old Notepad with a bloated UWP version, so it probably won’t be long before it starts sending telemetry as well.
- Comment on Innovation in Japan: McDonald's installs phone cleaning devices. Kills 99.9% of germs within 30 seconds while customers wash their hands - VIDEO 9 months ago:
IT guy here, the NFC thing isn’t really a concern (NFC doesn’t work that way) or for that matter, any other wireless technology, as it’ll need to authenticate with your phone somehow. If you can somehow simply scan data from your phone without any form of authentication, that would be a massive security hole - and something that would be patched by the vendors real quick. Also, if something like that were possible then the TSA/FBI wouldn’t have any issues pulling data from locked phones - see the case of FBI vs Apple for instance.
The other issues you’ve mentioned are valid though. Heck my Galaxy Fold won’t even fit in that slot.

I that case, check out Fedora CoreOS.
- Comment on Alternatives to RancherOS? 1 year ago:
It runs entirely in RAM, administration is super simple, no ssh, easy to update/and upgrade, immutable, minimal distro designed specifically for secure container usage.

How about Gogs? The whole thing < 30 MB and is lightweight enough to run on a Raspberry Pi. You can even get a native binary package if you want to run it without the overhead of Docker.
- Comment on The enshittification marches on – use Signal [WhatsApp] 1 year ago:
The enshittification actually began several years ago, back when FB bought WhatsApp. That was the moment you gave up on privacy, the moment that was a clear sign that it was all going to go downhill from there. If y’all didn’t quit WhatsApp at that time, then you bought it upon yourselves. The truth is, you’ve been using a shitty service for a long time and whoring your data to Meta and making Zuckerberg richer, so this latest feature bloat or we isn’t the least bit interesting.
- Comment on Why does Satispay not work without play services? 1 year ago:
Google Play Services provides a ton of APIs which some programmers may refer to, while developing their apps. These APIs are not part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). So if an app uses any of these APIs, depending on what/how it’s being used, an app may have partial functionality, or may not even work at at all, on a de-Googled/pure AOSP ROM.

- Comment on X is working on ID verification, what’s next? 1 year ago:
In both cases though, there is a legal requirement for an ID to prove that you’re above legal age to buy/consume alcohol. There is no legal requirement to provide such information to a social media platform.
- Comment on Notification help 1 year ago:
A launcher is just your home screen, it’s not a big deal switching to a different one, that’s one of the cool things about Android. I’m on a Z Fold as well btw. You can have multiple launchers installed at one time - you just change your default from the settings, so if you don’t like your new launcher you can always switch back.
- Comment on Notification help 1 year ago:
It’s not an Android issue. I suspect it’s the launcher you’re using.
Here’s an example on my Galaxy Fold 4, using AIO Launcher:
As you can see, there’s a notification from Discord. So I click on the app, and not only is the badge cleared, the notification is also gone from the notification center. So it’s all working as intended.
If this isn’t the behavior you’re experiencing, I’d suggest switching to an alternate launcher. Niagara Launcher is a great option - pretty simple, clean and relatively bug-free, and integrated notifications right into the launcher so you can actually read the notification, instead of just a red dot. (The launcher I use, AIO Launcher, also does that - but it’s information-heavy Ness and unusual layout may put off people, especially ex-iPhone users, so I don’t normally recommend it to others).

but Linux has a massive user-friendliness issue if you seemingly have to pick the right one, or your fucked.
That’s not really a “Linux” issue.
“Linux” isn’t some singular OS, it’s an ecosystem. It’s just like choosing a car, just because most cars have four wheels and an engine doesn’t mean they’re all the same. Selecting the right car is rightfully frustrating and can and does make a huge difference.
It’s like selling a Tesla to a 90 year old grandma and then her complaining that it’s unfriendly. And just because the Tesla is unfriendly to a particular audience doesn’t automatically make it a bad car, but even if it was, that doesn’t mean that all electric vehicles are as bad as Tesla.

Solid Explorer supports gallery/thumbnail view, and can browse NAS and cloud storage folders without any issues as well.
- Comment on Are people interested in multi-client stress tests on routers? 1 year ago:
Not really, to be honest. I’d rather see how compatible a particular router is against popular open-source firmware, how frequently the updates are delivered, etc.
For instance, the Asuswrt Merlin is a pretty good firmware for ASUS routers, but the updates (stable) aren’t frequent, and irregular - the last stable update currently was two months ago, which to me is unacceptable considering there have been critical vulnerabilities in ASUS routers. Given how malware and botnets are increasingly targeting routers these days, it’s imperative that updated get delivered at least once a month - with an out-of-band policy for critical vulnerabilities.

Why anyone still plays the ink jet game I do not fuckin know.
Space. At least for me, space is the reason. I’m flatting at the moment and can only keep the printer in my room, and it’s already quite cramped with all my gear here. If I could get a compact color laser MFD within the same dimensions as my current Brother inkjet, I’d switch in a heartbeart. Most of the compact laser printers I’ve seen are either monochrome, or don’t include form-feed scanning, or have some or the other shortcomings.

Microsoft are looking at putting datacenters under the ocean
Um, no they’re not. That article you linked is from 2018, and the experiment concluded in 2020. They pulled the data center out, and concluded that whilst the experiment was successful, several challenges still remain (such as around repairs and maintenance, physical security and energy supply reliability), so they haven’t toyed around with the idea since then.
Basically, Microsoft have no plans at all currently to put data centers under the ocean - unless you’ve got some insider knowledge.
- Comment on Young Koreans favor iPhones over Samsung Galaxy: survey 1 year ago:
I’ve always been a Stock Android fanboi, but I really wanted to buy a foldable, so got myself a a Galaxy Fold 4 last year. This is the first Samsung I’ve used after decades - my last one being a Galaxy S2. I removed all bloat (including crap like Bixby) using Universal Android Debloater, and using a custom launcher, I don’t really miss stock Android. There’s no performance issues, no annoying TouchWiz bugs like in the old days, everything’s running pretty smoothly.
In saying that, ideally I’d love to unlock the bootloader and run LineageOS on it, but there’s no build out for it yet (and unlikely there will be one for a long time), also, I’m not sure if I want to play the whole SafteyNet cat-and-mouse game again. Shizuku works great for apps that need higher privileges, I use Droidify and open-source apps where possible, life is good.

- Comment on The best air fryers for 2023 1 year ago:
As someone who has both a regular full-size electric oven and an air fryer, I use my air fryer a lot more and would 100% recommend it.
- It’s not just quicker, it’s a lot quicker, considering you don’t need to do a 15 minute preheat like regular ovens. On the other hand, my air fryer only needs 2 minutes.
- Saves a lot of energy - I mean, who doesn’t like to save energy? Especially when I want to reheat stuff, I’m done with the air fryer - even cleaning it - all in the duration a conventional oven would take to finish heating up.
- In my experience of cleaning both ovens and air fryers, I’d say an air fryer is easier to clean, simply because the surface area is a lot smaller. Sure, you can put an oven tray in the dishwasher, but don’t you clean the rest of the oven? As for an air fryer, you may be able to put the tray/basket in the dishwasher, depending on the model, but even otherwise, a couple of quick swipes with a paper towel does the trick.
In saying that, newer tabletop electric ovens also double up as air fryers, such as the one by Breville - so if you have the space and don’t have an existing oven, get one of of these I’d reckon as they would be more versatile.

- Comment on Has anyone tried one of these Steam Deck alternatives like ROG Ally, GPD, OneXPlayer etc? I'm kinda keen on this Ayaneo Geek 1S 1 year ago:
No, but even with the Windows tax it’s cheaper than the Steam Deck. The 512GB Steam Deck is $649, but the ROG Ally equivalent is $599 - and it has a much faster CPU+GPU.
- Comment on Has anyone tried one of these Steam Deck alternatives like ROG Ally, GPD, OneXPlayer etc? I'm kinda keen on this Ayaneo Geek 1S 1 year ago:
They’re all basically PCs so you can actually still install Linux on them. In fact, there’s a distro called ChimeraOS, which is a community-made SteamOS, that you can install on any handheld (or even a regular PC). ChimeraOS contributors even regularly test against popular handled devices (like the ROG Ally for instance) and put in fixes and optimizations for various things. So in that regard, getting something that’s NOT the Steam Deck may not be such a crazy idea.
