I don’t think we should keep treating this as meme. Things are just getting worse and fast for everyone, talking as a non american. I used to watch the late night shows on trump and laugh at the jokes but now it just makes my stomach turn. Especially now with the (surprising) opening and sidingwith russia, on top of eveything that has happened the last few weeks that involves the whole world either because he really means it or just to overwhelm the media and the public as he and his “advisors” do their thing behind the curtain, I feel this is not a joke anymore.
Did we all give up on calling him Drumpf?

I never did. He was always Donald Cunt in my house.

It’s childish nonsense, on par with republicans calling Biden Brandon. The only people who ever did call him that were liberal boomers.

Yeah, the goal was to remind him that we know a past he wants to deny, but it came off as insulting him for who he is and where he’s from. It gave us the outcome we wanted (a pissed off Trump, and it’s arguable that he never cared about it) at the expense of using their own tactics against them (othering people because of factors they can’t control) and honestly it didn’t feel right.

Did we give up on calling it Twitter as well? I refuse to call it 𝕏
Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 days ago
Some people call it X to differentiate it from pre musk twitter.

I’ve taken to calling them both as one…

It was always a pointless and stupid thing to begin with. It’s schoolyard bullshit. There’s way better things to call him.

Never did because it was stupid. The man’s committing unchecked crimes against humanity and you’re doing playground name-calling.
I think one of my earliest interactions on Lemmy was about how dumb a comment about the Russia-Ukraine war that used the name “POOtin” was.
Calling Trump “Drumpf” accomplishes absolutely nothing (seriously) and makes it seem like you’ve got nothing else than his grandparents’ funny-sounding foreign name to attack with.

Some of us just prefer to take the Whoopi Goldberg approach and never give them the dignity of saying or typing their actual name. The person is an egotistical sack of orange shit, I don’t like saying his name either. Every time someone says his name, it just strokes his ego that much more.

I think… there was a kernel of a decent instinct there. At the point that John Oliver bit came out I feel like we were all kinda just marveling at how far stupid playground insults managed to get Trump. “Well, ok, maybe he’s onto something. Let’s try it and see what happens.” Was a fine reaction for the time, but I think it was best abandoned quickly.
In 2025, not useful in the slightest. I don’t know what is precisely, but I don’t think it’s petty name calling.

Yeah, I’m glad most stopped.
I like to share excerpts from Lemmy with my incredibly right-wing family (hopefully to chip away at their staunch beliefs) and its SOOO much easier to share articles/comments when I don’t need to re-write them to exclude all Drumpf mentions. (Those mentions of course cause the person I’m trying to influence to immediately shut down and not read the rest of what I said)

The John Oliver bit about the sound of Trump vs Drumpf was an alright punchline to a show ten years ago, before even the first installment of this madness. Those were simpler times, though, and fundamentally I agree with you.
