Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote a letter asking Google to reject the U.S. decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on its mapping service.

My life is 100% degoogled. Took some time but I like it very much. Recently, I switched from OsmAnd (complex) to OrganicMaps (simple) and it’s great. I don’t get the traffic information, but this is how it is when there is noone tracking phones. I pay 1€ a month for Posteo-email and sync my contacts plus three calendars from them to my phone with DAVx³. It’s perfect.

I’m legitimately saddened by the fact this even needs to happen because of this moronic cretin.

I’m more worried about Elon ruining around in the treasury department at the moment.
Whatever they call the golf for the next 4 years is just whatever they call it for the next 4 years.
Google does a lot of geolocation dependent map drawing where borders are shown for one location and one country and in another location in another country

With all the illegal shit they are already doing and are going to do I personally don’t think there will be another election and if there is it will be like those in russia where the opposition gets imprisoned, released after the election and eventually murdered.
The gulf is renamed by fuckwits. Who says we have to use it. I refuse to call it anything but the Gulf of Mexico.
TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
So far I’ve got MapQuest and something called Maps.ME ready to replace Google.

The dumbest timeline…again.
AndrewZabar@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Why did the name get changed? U.S.A. needed another ego stroke? Our public perception of nonstop ego-masturbation slowing down?
GrumpyDuckling@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Other documents that mention “the gulf of Mexico” will become unenforceable.

The usual white nationalism bullshit.

Reminds me of when I posted “Trump’s white nationalist America” to a place right wingers frequent. They freaked out pretty hard. Gee, I wonder why.

The people with the authority to officially change the name in the U.S. did so. The opportunity to do something about it was 3 months ago when only about a third of eligible voters voted against this crap. So here we are, and it is only going to get worse.
ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 1 year ago
There is still reason to pressure Google in the US (based on this policy of theirs) and especially abroad (as they plan to use both names outside USA and Mexico). Otherwise, they are handing Trump an easy win.
CCMan1701A@startrek.website 1 year ago
I think the plan is if your in the US the name will change. I think. Something about USA being classified as a sensitive nation when before names didn’t hurt us.
Backbone lost.
TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Ahhh yes. The United States. A sensitive nation of white nationalist snowflakes. It’s honestly on brand.

It is fucking freedom fries all pver again.
ramble81@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Huh, I’m in the US and noticed it’s still the Gulf of Mexico.
Brain@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
It’s not official until the Government enters it into the Geographic Names Information System. Once that happens Google will begin changing their maps.
CCMan1701A@startrek.website 1 year ago
They are likely waiting for the cartographers to finish their jobs… Unless they were asked to resign… Who knows how this government functions at this point.
Waiting for the presidential cars to be replaced with cyber trucks.
tiramichu@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Google already did it right? But only for the US. Here in the UK it still shows as Gulf of Mexico.
Google is pretty well known for displaying certain ‘contended’ things with different names in different countries.
That this should even be contended is a joke, but Google just views this Trump-pandering as the price of their seat at the top table for this administration and they’re quite happy to do it.
If we have to rename it my vote is for “Gulf of CUM” (Cuba, USA and Mexico)
That’s fair isnt it? 💦
sik0fewl@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
It sounds like their is only one English language version of Maps, so Canada, UK, etc. will also change.
spankmonkey@lemmy.world 1 year ago
As a US citizen I want it left as the Gulf of Mexico.
nexguy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
So then in 4 years if a dem gets elected everything gets changed back… then a few years later if a rep gets elected…flipflop forever?
ethman42@lemmy.world 1 year ago
According to Google:
When our policy says that we display the “primary, common, local” names for a body of water, each of those three adjectives has an important and distinct meaning. By saying “primary”, we aim to include names of dominant use, rather than having to add every conceivable local nickname or variation. By saying “common”, we mean to include names which are in widespread daily use, rather than giving immediate recognition to any arbitrary governmental re-naming. In other words, if a ruler announced that henceforth the Pacific Ocean would be named after her mother, we would not add that placemark unless and until the name came into common usage. Finally, by saying “local”, we aim to reflect the primary and common names used by countries that actually border the body of water, as they are the countries recognized under international law as having a special sovereign stake in it.
