ok, hear he out, we make the cup so it’s tall enough for them to make silk to escape, but short enough so it’s only a mild inconvenience for them. less labour than current system and easier in the spiders.
problem is we don’t get a long single thread but just bundles of nets which can be spun into threads.

Do we collect spider silk on an industrial scale?
I remember seeing something about genetically modifying goats such that they would produce the proteins in spider silk in their milk, so the milk could be processed and then silk could be mechanically spun. This is a half-remembered TV documentary from years and years ago, so.
