- Comment on Reddit Will License Its Data to Train LLMs, So We Made a Firefox Extension That Lets You Replace Your Comments With Any (Non-Copyrighted) Text 9 months ago:
The users give the site a pretty broad license for their content. Calling it the user’s data is a moot point.
Don’t even recall if the Lemmy instance I use has a TOS, but it’s likely the server owner has similar rights just by the nature of how this tech works.
- Comment on Microsoft in their infinite wisdom has replaced the Hide Desktop icon with Copilot. 10 months ago:
Because MS puts work into backwards compatibility, so the business who paid someone to write an app for them 30 years ago can still use it today on a Win11 box. No shot of that happening on macOS, who has deprecated PowerPC and 32-bit support, and Linux is just too much of a wildcard.

It’s also about the customer having better options beyond “modify the ever-living shit out of Windows until it behaves”. Microsoft only does these things because they know how many hundreds of millions of customers are locked into their ecosystem. No matter what they do, no matter how poorly they treat their customers, they’ll keep coming back to buy more! So why should they care? Why should they slow down or offer some privacy-friendly version for anything below $1000 per person? Hell, I’m surprised Microsoft hasn’t been steadily raising the price of Windows over the years. Not like the customers are going to actually switch, right?
- Comment on Apple's next generation CarPlay allows auto manufacturers to license the OS | Don't look now but Apple is back to licensing an operating system after decades 10 months ago:
Gotcha. That kind of thing will have to be mandated by our governments because no automaker has anything to gain from that kind of open system.
- Comment on Apple's next generation CarPlay allows auto manufacturers to license the OS | Don't look now but Apple is back to licensing an operating system after decades 10 months ago:
I’m not sure I follow. Are you looking to add any app to your phone that would fulfill the CarPlay features like maps/music/phone on the car’s display? I’m only using Apple’s OS these days so I can’t speak to Android, but presently you can use any music app, any maps app, and any communications app that supports Apple’s API. Are you saying you want other apps to be able to send that experience to the car, and/or are you looking for a FLOSS system to run on the car itself?

No it’s not, it’s completely accurate. It’s just that it only takes 20% to be #1 because we have that many options now.

Won’t get much back though. It’ll be a small refund based on the cost of the feature relative to the overall purchase price.
- Comment on Meta sparks privacy fears after unveiling $299 Smart Glasses with hidden cameras: ‘You can now film everyone without them knowing’ 1 year ago:
Exactly what happened to Google Glass will happen to this thing so it doesn’t matter. It’s never going to get off the ground because most people don’t like having cameras pointed at them before they’re even asked. Just because cities are putting up cameras all over the place doesn’t mean the public accepts them.
- Comment on Buyer Receives Fake Core i9-13900K With i7-13700K Guts From Amazon 1 year ago:
Considering how expensive individual components can be, it’s always a good idea to ensure you got the exact model you paid for while there’s still a chance to return it or report fraud to your credit card company. Even with NiB items mistakes can be made and the wrong item could be shipped out.

Human drivers should be facing more rigorous testing regardless. It’s horrifically easy to get a license… and then they never test you again for the rest of your life. That’s just insane when you think about it. My test was in 2002. Feels like I should have to retake it at some point.

By “western society” do you mean the US? Because the EU doesn’t seem to have any qualms about regulating new technologies. That seems to be a uniquely American thing.

- Comment on The more I think about it, the more the 5 minute car commercial in Barbie bugs me. 1 year ago:
A fair point, but in your original example we’re talking about a cell phone. That’s a significantly more subtle inclusion than Tom draping himself in an American flag and riding off on the back of an eagle.
I don’t remember the scene we’re talking about, so if it was a cell phone in the real world I see no issue. If it was in Barbie’s world then it should’ve been plastic. That would be my only complaint.
- Comment on The more I think about it, the more the 5 minute car commercial in Barbie bugs me. 1 year ago:
I understand your point, but a movie that is itself a 2-hour advertisement doesn’t lose any of its value by showing other brands.
What’s bleak is that a movie about a toy grosses over a billion at the box office. Not that BMW or Samsung want you to look at their stuff.

- Comment on The recent criticism of Linus Tech Tips, explained 1 year ago:
Linus really doesn’t respond well to criticism. He’s trying to act like a sale and an auction are 2 different things? If some hardware vendor tried to feed him that excuse he’d devote a whole video to it! Hell, if someone had sold one of his screwdriver prototypes he’d probably have thrown a fit and sued (as is his right)!
He’s picking quantity of videos over quality, so stuff like this is only going to accelerate.

To each their own. I’m less than a mile from my library so it’s an easy choice. I’m also not in school and that seems to be the biggest use amongst my friend group.
- Comment on Canon is getting away with printers that won’t scan sans ink — but HP might pay 1 year ago:
They think they don’t have a choice. I’ve talked to people who use a printer maybe once a year for 3 pages but have convinced themselves they must have a printer in their home ready to go for the one time they’ll maybe need to print something out.
Your local library has a printer you can use. Mine lets me print 10 pages per day for free. I’d rather go to the Library than deal with HP’s bullshit, no question!
