I think we are very much in agreement. I don’t read a lot of what goes on in Showerthoughts. I would rather let people sort out their differences. Several users reported the thread, meaning that they wanted a moderator to take action.
If someone prefers zero moderation then they will need to look outside of Lemmy.world.

You should be able to see all the reports against you here: lemmy.world/modlog?page=1&actionType=All&userId=1…
I observe two things about your comment.
- You have an unpopular opinion of JK Rowling. I want to build a welcoming community so I want to support people with unpopular opinions, like yours.
- The comment is written in a way that not only states your opinion but is aggressive towards the other users. In isolation this comment isn’t too bad but in the context of your other comments there is a trend of agression that stirs up more aggression. I want to build a welcoming community so I want to avoid aggression towards users.
These two points are at odds. I originally removed your comment, you didn’t like that, you sent me a DM, so I tried this approach.
If you were in my shoes, how would you resolve the conflict created by observations 1 & 2?

Mod here. This thread devolved and reports were flying around so now it’s gone.
It was kicked off with the above comment. rainrain asked a question. If we assume the best intentions, it is a reasonable question but it is worded in a bit of a hostile way.
Leraje did a good job answering the question and ignoring the hostility.
In general, please approach opposing ideas with curiosity not hostility. We are all on the same team, we are all working together to build a better internet.

- Comment on Trump admin proposes redefining 'harm' to endangered animals 1 week ago:
Even from an economic perspective this proposed rule change is horrible. We learn an enormous amount from animals and that knowledge creates enormous economic value.
An example is the horseshoe crab
In 2023, the US Fish and Wildlife Service halted the harvesting of horseshoe crabs in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, South Carolina, from March 15 to July 15 to aid their reproduction.[87] This decision was influenced by the importance of horseshoe crab eggs as a food source for migratory birds, the ongoing use of horseshoe crabs for bait, and the use of their blood in medical products.[87] The ban supports the conservation goals of the refuge, spanning 66,000 acres (26,700 hectares) of marshes, beaches, and islands near Charleston.[87]
This estimates the value of horseshoe crabs to the medical research industry at $100M per year (they have special blue blood). And as our technology improves we are always learning more from animals, so we don’t know which animals will give us our next billion dollar industry. The cost of extinction to future generations is literally infinite.

Oh what bastards, they are doing this so that people forget about it after a 4 day weekend.
Set yourself an alarm.

Ok, it says that it should be officially published today.
This document is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on 04/17/2025 and available online at federalregister.gov/d/2025-06746, and on govinfo.gov
After that happens you have 30 days to leave a comment:
Go to the Federal eRulemaking Portal: www.regulations.gov. In the Search box, enter FWS–HQ–ES–2025–0034, which is the docket number for this rulemaking. Then, click on the Search button. On the resulting page, in the panel on the left side of the screen, under the Document Type heading, check the Proposed Rule box to locate this document. You may submit a comment by clicking on “Comment.”
Also, if you have the chance, protest like we are about to fuck over all future generations.

I’m a mod here. While it’s not one of my favorites, it does follow the format pretty well. I try to use Rule 1 sparingly.
It’s a bad look to shutdown critics. I think the votes and comments are doing a good job of bringing perspective to OP’s opinion.

You can block entire instances. You should be able to find it in the settings of your Lemmy app. I know Tesseract and Voyager let you edit it. I think you can also filter by keywords.

I moderate showerthoughts.
I certainly don’t know everything but I’m very sure I can’t edit other people’s posts.
If a post is questionable, then I try to message people and talk it out. We are all human.
Some people wish we moderated more aggressively to keep the post quality higher, others, like yourself wish there was less moderation. I try to leave things up unless there is an obvious violation, I try to apply the rules fairly, I am human.
- Comment on Child poverty hits record high in UK with nearly 4.5 million in low income households 4 weeks ago:
Reporting absolute numbers is fine but I really prefer precent changes.
Per this article it looks like child poverty grew 3% in one year.
It looks like the UK population grew by roughly 0.3% in the same time.
So child poverty grew nearly 10x faster than population. That seems like a dramatic change.

Yeah I had a similar thought to your first paragraph. I mostly use MBFC for the “factual reporting” rating, because it seems easier to be objective about.
Just to clarify, I don’t develop any fediverse software, I wouldn’t want to take any credit from those amazing people.
- Comment on Loops by pixelfied Is Doomed to Fail Because of Daniel Supernault 2 months ago:
I have always liked the saying that an overnight success takes 5-10 years. Getting frustrated with someone who is developing two different Fediverse platforms simultaneously after 12 days seems a little quick.
I think you make good arguments in your video about how similar loops and peertube are, but I don’t view that as a negative. We see lots of duplication in the world, even within open source (Linux vs BSD vs Redox, ardupilot vs pixhawk vs betaflight). When it’s open source they can all learn from each other and reach better solutions sooner.
