… the reading comprehension level of the average Lemmy user scares me
I literally said that I take the bus. And the shuttle.
- Comment on Uber's new shuttle service sounds a lot like a bus route 5 months ago:
Do people consider shuttles and buses the same thing? Because this sounds like a shuttle, which as far as I’m aware is completely different from a bus. I take a shuttle to the airport, which requires a reservation and ~$50 whereas I take a bus to get around town and it’s typically free.
Essentially it sounds like they are trying to dip into the shuttle market, not the inner-city bus market. Though maybe both?

Sadly for me it looks like I’ll need to go the DIY route with an esp32 board and an e-ink display, and drop any kind of stt + tts plans
Latte Panda 2 or just wait a couple years. It’ll happen eventually because it’s so obvious it’s literally unpatentable.

Magic
In all reality, it is a ChatGPTitty "fine"tune on some datasets they hobbled together for VQA and Android app UI driving. They did the initial test finetune, then apparently the CEO or whatever was drooling over it and said “lEt’S mAkE aN iOt DeViCe GuYs!!1!” after their paltry attempt to racketeer an NFT metaverse game.
Neither this nor Humane do any AI computation on device. It would be a stretch to say there’s even a possibility that the speech recognition could be client-side, as they are always-connected devices that are even more useless without Internet than they already are with.
Make no mistake: these money-hungry fucks are only selling you food cans labelled as magic beans. You have been warned and if you expect anything less from them then you only have your own dumbass to blame for trusting Silicon Valley.

Fun fact: cats sometimes respond similarly to humans when presented with the middle finger. Without training. And often it with cats that do hate it, it’s that finger specifically and only that specific gesture.
I still have absolutely no idea why, but some cats just naturally react as if it’s an offense towards them. Maybe they equate it to a tail raised straight?

You’re thinking of Doki Doki Literature Club, common mistake. It’s just a coincidence I suppose. DDLG most certainly predates that game and I don’t think their subject matter is at all related.
On the tame side of things, there’s chicks that like to call you “daddy” and want you to call them a “good/naughty little girl” and embrace the praise&punishment aspect of Dominance& Submission. Pretty vanilla stuff. I could get with it, and I reckon most guys may be able to, feels like the daddy thing isn’t too uncommon.
On other end… well, actually, I don’t want to talk about it. Look it up yourself, that way only you are to blame for cursing yourself with the knowledge

Ok good, so we’re on the same page. I just had to disambiguate because it was getting to that “wrongful grouping” territory.
But yeah something 100% needs to be done about the models people are training for celebrity and minor likenesses. I saw one model for the latter gaining popularity and I threw up a little in my mouth because the aesthetic they were going for was not okay and made me very concerned. I want to see these get action’d/desisted, but I also want assurance that they won’t drag us innocent pervs who just want stories and pictures of lewd foxgirls n shit to get caught in the crossfire for no good reason. Same thing all us weebs have been saying for years, just new chapter with heightened risks.

If you classify erotic roleplay as CSAM, then there is a whole sprawling community called DDLG that belongs on the sex offenders registry.
Noncon is similarly a much more prevalent fetish than people think.
The only difference between this debate and the traditional porn counterpart is that traditional video porn has always had actors who are verifiably of-age and consenting, despite whatever the roleplay may imply. With drawn and written erotica, there is no actor, it’s all text coming from imagination and how you interpret it is a function of both the reader’s and author’s imagination. What it depicts means virtually nothing and outlawing it means making it a thoughtcrime, which is a Pandora’s box you do not want opened.

I’ll need to find these studies and review them. Intuitively, the little I know about psychology suggests that that an extreme enough negative punishment will almost certainly cause a trauma deterring the afflicted individual from repeating the targeted behavior. This is, obviously, an unethical practice that no licensed practitioner of any form would employ and certainly qualifies as Cruel and Unusual Punishment. I am not promoting it’s use by any means, but suggesting that to the best of my inadequate knowledge that it’s supposedly effective. Then again, some may argue that capital punishment was meant to be an effective deterrent, which was proven false.
Any studies you care to share? No worries if not, just thought I should ask before I go venturing. Appreciate the discourse!

gotta say I’ve actually been pleased with Lemmy moderation so far. First time I got moderated I think was one of the admin peeps from my instance telling me to take a chill pill, which was fair and appreciated. And I think that’s probably similar for the couple other times I’ve been actioned so far. I can’t complain, FAFO, and mod/admin peeps seem pretty chill and level-headed about it. I only wish I could say the same about reddit mods, before a bunch of them became Iana’s sexist minions. But so far the Lemmy communities I’ve wandered into don’t seem to have that problem quite yet which is refreshing.
Also for any ex-reddit mods reading this: if you find IDU/turtle/poodle on the fediverse, avoid them. I will not hesitate to go scorched earth should I have another encounter with them. Otherwise, should we never cross paths again, I’m prepared to let it all go, since they did manage to convince myself and at least dozens of others suspectible to The Pipelines to leave Reddit.

I think it would rely more on fear factor. Like they put someone under for what feels like 2 months, so they are on the brink of giving up hope, then pull em out and go “alright now we’ll assess you’re status and determine whether to put you back in for 10 years”
I speculate it wouldn’t work on a variety of people though, as their brain could already be adjusted to altered time perception through the use of drugs. Even without hard drugs or Adderall, you can still fuck with your time perception using only weed and sugar (the food-- as in drink four cans of cola and get super baked immediately, then set 15 minute timers and get lost in your own head, see how long each of those 15 minutes feel)

Bear belongs just left of appletini, and vodka with mango juice belongs where beer is.
Vodka straight? Probably a healthy hatred for self and others. Mixed with juice? Now that person knows how to live a happy ass life.
Seriously, if you’ve a bad drinking habit, vodka and mango juice. You’ll crave alcohol less, you’re hangovers will be barely noticeable and pleasant, tastes great, is better for you than beers or rum and soda. Plus people will think you’re classy AF once you’ve learned to make a bunch of simple and pleasant cocktails.
Don’t waste your time with any of that dirty shit like Smirnoff. Buy something clean like Reyka or don’t bother.

To me it depends on how hard you work and game, and by that I just mean how you posture yourself over a keyboard and how actively/frantically you interface with a computer.
My posture is shit despite spending up to 14 hours a day in front of a computer. It’s still ways better than that of someone who hunches over their keyboard staring dead at their big ass monitor with their fingers locked in over the QE+WASD button group as they zone in to get that “flick” response time.
Meanwhile, my shitty posture is just lounging or reclining in my ergo chair as I swivel my neck to look at any of my three eye-level monitors. I shift around a lot and my hands aren’t near the keyboard unless I’m actively typing. I crack my neck and roll my shoulders often, sometimes stretch or go take a 15-minute walk. I only use dark themes and always have proper ambient lighting to prevent concentrated light exposure fucking up my eyesight.
I have been keeping this technophiliac routine going for about 5 years now. Depression, Severe General Anxiety/Paranoia, Alcoholism, Substance Abuse (weed), Over-eating, Serial Dating and unexplained bouts of mania were all problems I had to deal with during those five years. Some of them may have been amplified by this routine computer use but certainly not caused by it, I’ve identified the true causes for almost all of them and, aside from depression, they have nothing to do with sitting in front of screens all day.
There are much bigger issues associated with computer use and the media’s failure to report on them speaks volumes. Stop attacking the video games that aren’t predatory (keep going after the ones that are) and start really really taking a look at the effects of social media. Social media will destroy society long before video games get a chance to.
I stand by this statement, to the grave: Death to Social Media.

- Comment on acceptable screws 7 months ago:
There is one screw on this chart that I have a mortal hatred for. Just one. That being the fat Phillips (called “Phillips/square” on this chart meme thing).
I have no idea why, but some companies can’t resist the sadistic urge to put tiny versions of these fuckers on equipment that should just use a torque or Phillips screw head. But no, they want you to truly suffer. Because they don’t stop there: they make the fragile little fuckers out of NICKEL. Which means they are extra malleable and prone to strip if you so much as look at them the wrong way. So imagine you need to replace a hard drive on a RAID-type storage pool that’s already down two spares and you can’t fucking get the drive out of it’s sled because the vendor not only hired a bodybuilder to tighten the screws, but simultaneously chose the worst possible metal just for giggles and chose the screw head that they no body will have the proper bit for and will inevitably use a normal phillips on until it strips.
I now have a ritual procedure of putting every drive that gets replaced in the coldest cold aisle in the datacenter for at least 5 minutes just to make these fucking screws less likely to ruin my day.
Fuck whoever invented the fat phillips, even the lowest ring of hell is too good for them.

Completely agree with your points. But also hope you can see it may be more fruitful to appear as though you’re ready to attack the problem, rather than your fellow man.
I say this because I didn’t read this as an outright attack or denigration of your fellow man, but I very much fear how easily any other man may interpret it and how it could serve to further the divide and make the problem even harder to address. That is my chief concern.
I appreciate you taking the time to clarify your position fellow internet stranger <3

Thank you for the civil discussion.
Completely agree about unchecked power and your interpretation of it as a heuristic rather than an ambiguously defined trait.
I most certainly realize the plight is real and wish it never was like I’d hope all of us can say. But the lack of nuance struck me as dangerous. I understand how disenfranchised men will interpret things, and when people willfully neglect the opportunity to be concise it leaves a worrying amount of room for misinterpretation and effectively is ragebait that can serve to further entrench a misguided incel or the like into their toxic niche.
And for anyone who thinks I’m overreacting: see how Reddit powermod awkward_the_turtle intentionally acted to provoke men, then wrote off everyone who took issue with it as inherently being member of the ideology they were allegedly targeting. Reddit, the company, enabled and encouraged this mod and their collaborators to attack users on their platform indiscriminately.
If Lemmy is to serve as only a new platform for abuse, then it deserves to die with the rest of social media. Please, do not let it come to this. Discuss and debate civilly.

This is a consistent and very unpleasant fact of the world that white men will treat anyone of any other demographic as less than equals.
Pls stop generalizing this bad behavior upon all white men. It only serves to further the divide, and is completely unfair and uncalled for against those in the demographic who don’t subscribe to those beliefs or patterns of behavior.
I’m not sure if that was your intent, that’s just how it comes across and it makes it hard not to completely write off your argument/viewpoints for being unable to respect your neighbor.
