If you enjoy reading, !Books@Lemmy.world is pretty active place to discuss what you’re reading and review it or get recommendations.
I try to post significant price drops routinely to !ebookdeals@literature.cafe as well. I mostly post ones that I have heard good things about or read myself and really enjoyed are valid at all 3 big US ebook retailers, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon at the same time or Humble Bundles. There’s no rule against others posting deals they endorse for other regions or other books, I just wanted to avoid it being a firehouse of spammy links and I only shop US Stores.

That’s false, in 2000 there was 84,999. Elvis faked his own death to get a piece of the impersonator action.

on a related note, I also wonder I wonder how many older people self-treated ADHD/ADD with nicotine without realizing what was going on.

It’s a joke, but I’m 43 and my mom knew others who were pregnant around the same time and told to smoke by actual doctors so they’d have a smaller baby and easier birth.

- Comment on what lemmy web app do you use and why? 1 month ago:
Arctic and Mlem.
Arctic is my primary, it was the first that I know of to include admin tools, the single developer is super accessible and on top of for resolving bugs and does a good job at supporting markdown both in the editor and the viewer.
Mlem is my backup if I need to access 2 different spots on the Lemmy-verse. It has a great viewer and interface but is missing a markdown editor.

I can still beat an AI at the 100 meter dash though. Suck on that AI.

I knew I was going to get every downvote I got. He’s got an Elon Musk-like cult of personality in some tech spheres and even implying that he’s not 100% right will get dogpiled by white knights.
I had the same experience as you and there were at least a couple opportunities where I had close acquaintances that actually knew more about topics that were more outside of his wheelhouse who confirmed that he was just regurgitating things that were common misconceptions or “close, but not quite”-type inaccuracies but doing it as though he possessed absolute authority. I’ve even seen others try to correct him on those in the past when they knew more and his responses were not the way one responds when you’re actually interested in fact over the art of the diatribe.
I don’t have anything real negative against him and he’s definitely done quite a few things that and result in a positive improvement, but I’m also thinking he’d probably benefit from a bit more humility.

There’s a group of people that are really upset that this is on the internet, honestly we’ve so soured on the use of shock imagery in general that in some countries like Sweden we’ve formed a small political party. Just look up the “Lemon Party” to see our plans on what to do about these sort of shock images.

Yeah, I was a bit slow there.
- Comment on Cory Doctorow on Search Engine Enshittification 2 months ago:
He always strikes me as the kind of person that confuses his moderately deep knowledge of a limited topic set with thinking that makes him an over-confident expert on a much larger variety of topics. Like when economists start making declarations about climate change science.

Sorry, it was a joke that needed quotes, the “friend” was me. I find it vile and only good as an ingredient in other things like deviled eggs, not as a sandwich condiment itself. I am glad others (like my wife) like it, but ‘[shivers]’
- Comment on So sad 2 months ago:
That’s true for Miracle Whip too, and that stuff tastes like goblin cum (or so I’ve heard from a friend).

This and Operation Paperclip are basically open secrets at this point. I mean, they both have pretty extensive Wikipedia pages, and they made a movie about Wernher von Braun. It’s not some hidden secret.

!arctic@lemmy.world has good markdown support and if it’s missing anything the developer is pretty good at making sure the next update supports it.

Did I say he wasn’t a Nazi? Weird, I just re-read my post and I don’t see that there.
I think the implication that he was a full participant as Chief of [General] Staff when it was purely in an acting role after a resignation and possibly was also involved in an assassination attempt on Hitler’s life remove important context from the full view of history especially at a time where Russian Propagandists would love for nothing more to smear NATO to further their own ends as they invade a sovereign nation.
But you do you.
- Comment on [deleted] 3 months ago:
