These services are mainly relevant for PC/browser users. Apps should be able to resolve the original links to open them natively (at least Boost does that). And with Lemmy 1.0 coming up this will be in the codebase of Lemmy itself.

Imported US culture (movies, TV etc) has successfully planted the idea in a lot of people that teenagers under 18 are “essentially the same as little children”. So no one cares about technicalities.

The issue here is that most countries define the age of consent differently. I think we can agree that when a 16 year old agrees to sexual contact with another 16 year old, the dynamic is different than if they agree to it with a 40 year old. Absolutely. But that does not mean that the 16 year old doesnt understand what they are doing.

I can assure you that the judiciary system in my country does work. It’s just that these people either a. just want to beat someone up and need an excuse, or b. don’t agree with our laws and think it should be prison time for a 18 year old who wants to date a 16 year old, or a 21 year old who wants to date a 17 year old.

They lump far more people into the same group. They attack anyone whom they think they can, even if they know that their accusations are BS.

Just happened here in Austria. Police took 20 people into custody (13 have since been formally arrested) for luring people to fake dates where they beat them up.
The suspects said they hunted pedophiles, but at least in some of the cases they targeted young adults who expected to come to a date with 16-18 year olds.

There are now Fediverse Enhancement Proposals (FEP) that are being published by Fedi developers with the goal to improve interoperability and well-being of diverse services, applications and communities that form the Fediverse.
- Comment on Plugin support now ready for devs, releasing with v1.0 6 days ago:
From the RFC that is linked above:
“Plugins will make Lemmy more flexible, and allow implementing features which are too niche for merging into Lemmy core. It will allow Lemmy to focus on core features, while allowing outside developers to contribute new features without using Rust.”
- Comment on The fediverse has a bullying problem 6 days ago:
Everyone I ever talked to told me “well yes we have to implement our own version of ActivityPub because AP is under-defined”. In most cases it is defined what AP does, but not how. Therefore individual programers go in and figure out on their own how a certain thing they are building for their platform should be structured in AP.
Now, every project could simply go “I will copy the way Pixelfed implements it”. But why should PF have that priviledge?
- Comment on The fediverse has a bullying problem 6 days ago:
That is still not the point the commenter and the original blog author were making.
What we can take away from this episode is that Pixelfed implemented the fix in a way that suggests they would not handle a 0 day exploit with a “reql” vulnerability well. And having followed dansup’s projects for a while that doesnt surprise me, because he clearly prefers to work “chaoticly” than in a structured, regulated way.
The “taking the heat” is something completely seprrate and boils down to stupid people on the internet needing to be angry at someone.

“First world” etc are political terms relating to Cold War allegiance.
What you mean is “developed country” and there are good arguments that the US has never fully fitted that label. You’d have people coming from “developing countries” to the US and realize that infrastructure and social security there is way worse than in their home country.

Imo it demonstrates that for certain threat models the fediverse simply doesn’t have the 100% secure answers.

- Comment on Why is there so much separation in the USA between people who identify as "black" or "white" compared to other regions like South America? 4 weeks ago:
Yes, and Argentina is a very unusual South American country due to this. Brazil has a national identity that is based on being mixed. Countries like Peru or Bolivia have made their own national identities that are different but still don’t emphasize ethnicity/skin colour as the US does.

He is gonna get a long stronger. It is important to approach this with sensibility: saying stuff like “strong men are dangerous” or “men are strong and women are weak” etc can actively harm young men’s mental health. I’m sure there are good resources for this online as well, though I’m not sure where. He needs to realize that he will need to control how much force he puts into things much more than as a child, but at the same time that people are not afraid of him and should not be.

As someone who watched the super bowl and actively looked at posts in the fediverse on my second screen, I think that @laurenshof@indieweb.social missed out on posts because he looked under the “superbowl” hashtag which had been taken over by people posting owls. Quite a few posts about the game and the halftimeshow happened under inconsistent hashtags like #nfl, #sblix, #superbowllix, #halftimeshow, #superbowl2025, #superbowlhalftime, #kcvsphi, etc. Some people used no hashtags at all and I found their posts by fulltext-searching for terms like “Mahomes”. Mainly seemed to me like people werent in agreement with each other on which hashtag to use for their posts.
