- Comment on Helldivers 2 community manager says internal discussions are ongoing regarding mandatory PSN account link 6 months ago:
It's not really a new anti cheat though.
nProtect Gameguard (the one they use) is probably one of the few that supports the engine Helldivers uses (Autodesk Stingray/Bitsquid)
- Comment on Finland detects more GPS jammers as drivers increasingly try to hide their tracks | Yle News | Yle 8 months ago:
A camera and GPS are two very different technologies with distinct capabilities that do not overlap.
- Comment on Windows 11 24H2 goes from “unsupported” to “unbootable” on some older PCs 9 months ago:
In modern x86 CPUs, POPCNT is implemented as part of the SSE4 instruction set. For Intel's chips, it was added as part of SSE4.2 in the original first-generation Core architecture, codenamed Nehalem. In AMD's processors, it's included in SSE4a, first used in Phenom, Athlon, and Sempron CPUs based on the K10 architecture. These architectures date back to 2008 and 2007, respectively.
That effectively bars mid-2000s Intel Core 2 Duo systems and early Athlon 64-era PCs from booting Windows 11 at all, not that they officially supported it in the first place. This means the change should mainly affect retro-computing enthusiasts who spend their days making YouTube videos in the "we installed Windows 11 on a potato, let's see how it runs" genre rather than users of actual systems.
You can check your SSE support for 4.2(Intel) and 4a(AMD) but it sounds like unless you're running some real old stuff you shouldn't have to worry.

- Comment on Their Songs Were Stolen by Phantom Artists. They Couldn’t Get Them Back. | Bad Dog, a group from D.C., was forced to take a crash course in streaming fraud, a shadowy realm that costs musicians $2b/yr 10 months ago:
In the late 1990s and early aughts, millions of fans routinely downloaded songs from online peer-to-peer file services without paying a penny, a fiasco that cost the industry a fortune.
I guess in potential lost pennies, peer to peer sorta means they wouldn't be involved in hosting the files and paying for bandwidth.
- Comment on This console generation seems skippable 10 months ago:
The big benefit of a PC is not being locked into a manufacturer's ecosystem.
Steam is very dominant but it's ultimately up to the owner of the device what runs on it.I suppose that doesn't matter if you just want to play games, but I appreciate being able to disable intro movies and other such settings manually if I have to.
- Comment on Tesla is banned from driving schools because of new turn signals 10 months ago:
Tesla’s reasoning for going away with a method universally used for signaling turn for decades is that it enables them to remove a physical part, the stalk, and it believes activating a turn signal will soon be unnecessary with the advent of self-driving.
Spit my drink up a bit when I read that.
- Comment on Xbox Player Gets Banned for 1 Year After Recording Baldur's Gate 3 Scenes 10 months ago:
people still lose access to Minecraft for what they do in private worlds that are “friends only.”
The chat reporting help page also lays out that reports must be initiated by a player and will be reviewed by the moderation, which should hopefully limit the false-report problems sometimes associated with more automated moderation systems.
If that happens you kind of have to assume your 'friend' reported you.
- Comment on AppleTV complete replacement opinions 10 months ago:
They are not the fastest things in the world, some apps are a bit sluggish.
But easy to use and cheap are nice qualities. One of the few things you can't really do on Roku is Twitch, but that's not something I really care about.
- Comment on Why a kilobyte is 1000 and not 1024 bytes 10 months ago:
To be consistent they should call bytes bibytes though, and I don't think they do.
if i'm ever writing technical manuals and docs I'll just be as precise about the actual numbers as I can. (not very likely)
- Comment on The Outer Worlds w/ All DLC free until 26 Dec 2023 4PM UTC 10 months ago:
non-Valve games were starting to depend on having Steam installed
The problem was/is their policy of allowing the non-Valve games to also require their own storefront launcher alongside Steam.
There was that one dark period of "Games For Windows Live" on Steam, but those issues are pretty rare nowadays.
- Comment on YouTube uses lower quality options on browsers running on Arm-based systems — misreporting as an x86 CPU appears to be a widespread browser fix 11 months ago:
Piped is based on NewPipe's extractor.
If you want an app it's available on f-droid or with sponsor block on Izzy's repo. - Comment on Beeper Mini Is Back 11 months ago:
Apple is just going to turn the codebase to iMessage over to a 3rd party?
That's actually backwards - it's beeper OFFERING to do that.
- Comment on Beeper Mini team says a fix is ‘coming soon’ and promises to extend users’ free trials 11 months ago:
If the open source community could provide such a service for free I think they would have done it already?
But presumably they lack the ability, the motivation or both.
- Comment on Beeper Mini’s iMessage app for Android is broken, possibly by Apple 11 months ago:
It's ubiquitous by default, which makes it common among certain hardware for allegedly mysterious reasons.
- Comment on Beeper Mini’s iMessage app for Android is broken, possibly by Apple 11 months ago:
That's true but it's neither an app or a common platform.
It's an exclusive one. - Comment on Lower Decks: Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? 11 months ago:
Out of all the new trek it's the only one that feels like star trek to me and not more like bad star trek fan fiction.
- Comment on If you have an Android phone have you tried Beeper Mini 11 months ago:
if it was that easy to change other people's habits i would rule the world
- Comment on If you have an Android phone have you tried Beeper Mini 11 months ago:
Because receiving pictures/videos(or sending) from iPhones sucks and it's basically impossible to explain that it's a problem on their end.
- Comment on Chrome’s next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates 11 months ago:
Techies definitely underestimate how averse more normal people are to what we would consider minor changes.
If it changes their habits in some way it basically becomes an actual barrier that they need to overcome.I already move between browsers all the time but having to deal with unfamiliar buttons and menus is actually stress inducing to many people.
- Comment on I remember getting a PS3 just to avoid this back then 11 months ago:
All consoles are computers, in the sense that their chips are turing-complete
They don't really make a computer that can only run the things you like and none of the things you don't.
They're just computers locked down by digital rights management with opaque operating systems. - Comment on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year 11 months ago:
Apple relies too much on lock-in effect to actually offer that - instead of taking $5/month and having to develop and maintain such interoperability they'd really rather you just get on their platform instead.

It's not like many (any?) other games, not in the mainstream sphere anyway.
I made the mistake of trying to play with mouse and keyboard but once I got flying with a controller I was set. - Comment on Free returns disappearing from retailers | The era of free returns — an essential part of the rise of online shopping — is ending 1 year ago:
Free returns is great insulation against broken products.
Having to pay 15% just to return something that arrived broken definitely prevented any unnecessary purchases from that company in the future.
- Comment on why is the world suddebly focused on the irsali-palestine conflict and hamas group? 1 year ago:
Hamas announced the start of the operation, stating that it had fired over 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel within a span of 20 minutes. Israeli sources reported that at least 3,000 projectiles had been launched from Gaza. At least five people were killed by the rocket attacks.
They overwhelmed the air defense system just through sheer numbers. Proving a bit of theoretical weakness and showing how they could utilize such openings.

video hosting is extremely expensive
Year over year I'm pretty sure the cost has only gone down.
TBF 4k and higher resolutions are more common but it's generally not nearly as expensive as it once was.
