It’s a great idea for a way to encourage donations to these projects.
- Comment on What's the deal with male loneliness? 2 weeks ago:
Women are better at being friends to each other. I’ve basically given up on trying to make friends with other men because they are terrible friends. At best, they make no effort at all at friendship and are completely passive, requiring you to call and make all the plans. At worst, they are hostile in various ways when you try to befriend them.

I started a new as a restaurant host once. The day after my first shift I got violently ill, puked everywhere. I called them up and told them I had the flu and could not work. They never scheduled me again and didn’t pay me for my first shift.

Also, they handle multiple orders. So, by the time you get your food it’s lukewarm at best, but likely cold and soggy.

- Comment on Pokémon Go Players Have Unwittingly Trained AI to Navigate the World 1 month ago:
I think people will still “contribute” because they also don’t care that their use of certain platforms leaks data with which to target ads at them.
In the same vein though, once AI essentially destroys a site like Stack Overflow, where will AI companies source new training data with updated information? Also, we are likely to see something like 50% of content being AI generated. Are AI models then going to train on the content they themselves created? What is the impact of that? What is the use?
- Comment on 'My personal failure was being stumped': Gabe Newell says finishing Half-Life 2: Episode 3 just to conclude the story would've been 'copping out of [Valve's] obligation to gamers' 2 months ago:
Well, I use Steam a ton and have a Steam Deck. But, Steam dev effort to income ratio is probably ridiculously skewed. The company pretty much prints money. In that way, Steam is a cash grab.
I do question if Steam hadn’t been such a success if Valve might have released HL3 by now.
It has Google vibes to it. Google makes so much money in ad revenue that a lot of their other products just get cancelled.
I do like Valve overall though and am a fan.

I’m not complaining, just noting that it was very lucrative. Folks are really overreacting with the downvotes. Chill people.

Is assassin’s creed any good? Once a game becomes a franchise with a bajillion releases I just tune it out. Feel the same way about marvel movies. Maybe they’re good, maybe they’re bad, but I’m more annoyed that they’re trying to shove it down my throat, so I tune out.

I always wondered this too. It was a good idea 15 years ago. But, they don’t offer enough to justify the price. Literally everyone offers cloud storage now and a million other features too.

- Comment on Amazon tech workers leaving for other jobs in response to return to office mandate 3 months ago:
It’s funny that Apple was added later given that it is the most valuable company… it’s seen the highest stock growth of any company on earth.
- Comment on Amazon tech workers leaving for other jobs in response to return to office mandate 3 months ago:
Yeah and they have an average tenure of like 1.2 years, but their stock vesting schedule gives you 5% in year one, then 15%, 40%, and 40%. So you’re pretty likely to never get whatever carrot they dangle in front of you.
- Comment on Amazon tech workers leaving for other jobs in response to return to office mandate 3 months ago:
I really do wonder if Amazon will run out of people willing to work for them someday. Their approach assumes there is an infinite supply of workers to burn through. Given everything I’ve witnessed from the company, I’d never work there. Do they at some point poison the labor pool against them?

It would be nice if the GrapheneOS dev would work it out with the FairPhone folks to make a device that could be supported. I don’t know why any company would hesitate to work with him, he is obviously doing good stuff, but I agree, Pixel only is kind of a turn off because it doesn’t seem like a long term path to building something sustainable in terms of both hardware and software. It’s a workaround.
