Ahh. Netflix trying to “revive” a show. I bet Netflix will axe this like most of its shows.

bottom line is that Prodigy Season 1 will now air on Netflix and Season 2 will hit in 2024.

It was nice to see the author of the piece dive in to the fact that the various Paramount subsidiaries don’t always share the same goals or agree with the decisions of the others.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Is it even worth watching as a trekki? 🤔
solitaire@infosec.pub 1 year ago
It’s great for what it is, but it’s fundamentally a kids show. It’s nicely animated, well acted and a lot more palatable to an adult audience than most but it doesn’t scratch that Trek itch beyond using the IP. It’s very much an action adventure cartoon.
The one exception is if you’re really invested in Voyager. Characters from it aren’t just cameos, so it pays out a lot more if you’d love some more Janeway.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Oh, that’s what i feared. Hmm, yes i do love voyager, and it might be nice indeed. Thanks man!

It’s a slow burn introduction to Trek. The show starts off having not much to do with Trek, as the crew itself has nothing to do with the Federation or Starfleet, but they go through a process of learning what Starfleet is, and they try their best to aspire to its ideals so they might be accepted to the academy when they reach the Federation. Ideas (e.g., prime directive, augments, temporal directives) are introduced one at a time with explanations. It’s not meant to “just” be a kids’ show, it’s meant to be a kids’ introduction to Trek. And as a fan of Trek, I think also a good introduction for a non-fan who might feel lost by how vast the Trek universe is. It’s not about politics or diplomacy, but it carries the same spirit of unity, optimism, and the hope for the best of humanity that underlies Trek.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Very well put. That spirit is what i want from my treks. So yes, will watch it 😌 Thanks man!
ThrowawayInTheYear23@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yes, It’s more fun then watching Discovery.

@Dyskolos @ValueSubtracted it's truly disappointing how often I see this question. I cannot give it a strong enough recommendation, our family LOVED it and my kids can't wait to watch season 2 ❤️
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Oh the majority here seems to like it, so i will give it a go. I just thought it was (from the presentation) very kid-targeted.
june@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I really enjoyed it.
wigbert@mastodon.world 1 year ago
somehow, any trek has its own merits - even the worst movies ( #TheFinalFrontier ) or stupid episodes with Jonathan Archer … 🖖🏽
phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Eh, no.
Discovery had no merits beyond glorifying space Jesus who was so much better than Spock? It was trash, and if possible, Picard was even worse. Absolute garbage written and produced by people who self professedly didn’t know star trek, had no interest in making star trek, and wanting to use the platform to push through their political views. How anyone ever even expected any of that shit to be any good is beyond me.
andthenthreemore@startrek.website 1 year ago
Second best new trek after SNW. Very very much yes.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Okokok, you all got me convinced already ,-)
phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Everything nu trek since those godawful reboot movies has been utter shit, really.
St Discovery was painfully funny in a really bad way.
St Picard ruined TNG and all its characters for me, great going. Haven’t rewatched TNG ever since
St prodigy cartoon was just painfully bad again
There is more but I stopped watching and I’m not wasting my time on modern trek anymore, it’s dead, please let it rot in peace.
Lem453@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
You watched all these 3 but not strange new worlds or lower decks (definitely the best new trek in a decade)?
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Please give SNW another go. For your own5e enjoyment. It’s really back to the old glory. At least for now. And lower decks was special. A comedy-spin-off I’d call it, but really good too. Just a special taste.
ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 1 year ago
That’s entirely up to you.
unwantedpamphlet@mastodon.social 1 year ago
@Dyskolos @ValueSubtracted I tried 3 times to get into it and I couldn’t. Today I forced it and it was at the end of episode 9 when I said “ok, this is a good show.” That much work just to start liking a show isn’t for everyone but after finishing the first season I think it’s worth it. I think the second is set up to be really good and I’m excited for it. I didn’t like lower decks or enterprise at first either.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
You made it sound very tempting. But all the other guys already sold me on giving it a chance :-) And me too. didn’t like lower decks or enterprise at first neither. But they both grew on me and totally earned their place in my trekkie-heart.
giggling_engine@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I thought it was the least Star Trek Star Trek out of all of them, and I include Discovery in this list…
StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 1 year ago
Did you watch more than a handful of episodes?
Most long time fans who’ve seen the entire first season describe it as the most ‘Trek’ of the new eras of shows.
It starts out intentionally in a location outside the Federation that is tonally more like SW, and with characters that either don’t know or are hostile to the Federation. It meets new viewers where they are and then brings them into the fold.
By the middle of the first season it’s celebrating everything that’s great about the franchise.
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Worse than discovery? Ouch…

i like prodigy but not enough to get netflix again
mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Knowing Netflix? One more season, a cliffhanger ending, and bitter recrimination.
MrNobody@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
So, Netflix is no different from any other tv production company that’s ever existed then?
Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Most likely… Ugh
