      In the UK, double-decker was the standard form of motor bus since their introduction in the late 1800s. Before being manufactured as purpose-built ICE vehicles, they came in all shapes and sizes (PDF warning), but they mostly standardised on double-deckers because of the extra carrying capacity.

      This bus was launched in around 1940, and surprisingly they almost chose to demolish the gate to permit standard double-decker buses instead.
