If every accusation is a confession, the “woke mind virus” panic was a clear-cut admission of an existing opposite-ideology virus that's making many people very mentally ill

This is what I think every time I see my coworker wear his InfoWars T-shirt with the “there’s a war on for your mind” slogan on the back.

Always has been. Used to be contained to religion.

God is all knowing, he created the universe, he created man, he created all life on earth, he created complex ecosystems that symbiotically support each other by each others existence.

He created man with a complex brain that has sentience, and a unique ability to design new concepts.

But even with all that, God just can’t balance a checkbook. He needs you to give 10% of human created currency to…uhhh…look, just put your money in the bowl. Don’t question it.

And these concepts go back thousands of years. Then sometime in the 1960s, some assholes started plotting ways to expand on that through government control. Then years later Nixon was like “Yeah, sure, I’ll do that. I’m corrupt enough. Now help me spy on the democrats!”

Then each year the government spends just a little less on education, and the masses get dumber, and easier to manipulate.

Then some time in the 90s, Rupert Murdock was like “Hey, what if we brainwash these assholes 24/7? Then we can expand our corruption even FURTHER!!!”

And now we’re at the point where I legitimately think some of these people can’t even be thought of people. More like zombies. Wait, no. That’s not quite fair. Zombies at least seek out brains. These people today have no desire use for brains.

How do you know you have TDS? A Trump voter will diagnose you.

Lol seriously. I see so many people say “TDS” and I’m like “thats not a real thing its just something some pundits made up.”

Should I feel blessed in my ignorance that I’ve never heard of TDS?

Oh it’s a real thing, it’s just that conservatives are the ones who don’t believe they have it. You know, just like they were trained to do with COVID, and vaccinations.

The term “TDS” is absolutely an example of every accusation is a confession.

Yes. Very much so. Calling it a “virus” is an analogy to simplify the concept to a sound bite, and an author like Neal Stephenson made a “mind virus” central to the plot of his book, Snow Crash. But strip away the literary liberties, and it’s based on real neuroscience. See, for example, this article from a few years ago.

    Quote:

It is well-documented that for example words like “reptiles” and “parasites” were used by the Nazi regime to compare outsiders and minorities to animals. Strongmen throughout history have referred to targeted social groups as “rats” or “pests” or “a plague.” And it’s effective regardless of whether the people who hear this language are predisposed to jump to extreme conclusions. Once someone is tuned into these metaphors, their brain actually changes in ways that make them more likely to believe bigger lies, even conspiracy theories.

I have this pet theory that the fact that some of the first TV broadcasts were Hitler’s speeches is more than just a historical curiosity. Broadcast media (i.e. radio) had come along just a few years before. Right after it provided a way for authoritarian leaders like Hitler to reach great numbers of people with their spoken words., the world saw an explosion of right-wing populism at a scale never seen before. I suspect it’s not just a coincidence. (The Nazis certainly understood the propaganda opportunity.)

It certainly resembled a viral outbreak.

The Conservative Propaganda Machine in America is a truly amazing entity. It has convinced a sizeable portion of the population that it is our moral imperative to trade our labor for wages that barely allow us to survive, so a chosen few can live like Gods.

Well, yea. Right-Wing ideology IS a mental illness

    • cosmOS@lemmy.zip ⁨1⁩ ⁨day⁩ ago

Word choice is important here. Labeling woke ideology a “virus” implies accusers are deploying their own counter-ideology “virus”. We know that billionaire owned algorithms and social media echo chambers are already doing this to vulnerable people, but this confession hints at something even darker and not yet public.
