My mother-in-law keeps giving me scented candles for my birthday. I’m happy to receive them because it’s one less thing she has to worry about - what do I want for my birthday? Scented candles.
They all end up in the charity shops but she doesn’t need to know that. :)
They are consumables so you can just say you used the up if anyone asks.
As a person who is difficult to buy for (not because I want special things but because I don’t really want anything), candles are ideal as I either like them and use them, or can say I did. Much better that something I am expected to wear or constantly display in my home.
If you give me a candle as a present, you are not my friend anymore.
If I give you a candle as a present, I was never your friend.
i have irritant-induced asthma and if there’s a lit candle in the room with me I breathe significantly worse and have to cough a lot
scented is very noxious, because they have chemicals in it to volatilize the scents. usually aromatic or alcohols.
PSA: Don’t give scented candles to your friends who keep invertebrate pets. There is some evidence that aerosolized scents can cause dyskinetic syndrome, which is a terrible way to go.

because the volatine chemicals have aromatic compounds, or alcohols in it.
Rather a nice warning, but good looking out.
Most of the candle is designed very specifically so that it will not, in fact, catch fire and burn.

They’re a terrible gift. I have a zillion candles they I keep around and can’t quite get around to throwing away
I like giving bacon scented candles to my vegan friends to remind them of what they’re missing.
That would fall under the category of a dick move.
Is it a dick move if they’re vegan bacon scented candles though?
If I don’t like them it’s probably because it’s scented and makes my allergies go nuts 😟
Set them on fire outside? Safety.
There aren’t many things you CAN’T do that with.
Almost like it’s their intended purpose.

And they never go bad so you can just slap a new label on the gift and give it to someone else next Christmas
