The key is sharing a hobby. For me, it’s board games and TTRPGs. Much easier to hang if there’s an activity.

Yes I think a lot of people (myself included) stumble when we try to clean up and “getting hammered on Friday night” isn’t a good hobby anymore, and your old party friends all go through the same thing. Just need to replace it with “XYZ hobby on Thursday” or whatever, but that’s a bit easier said than done maybe.

You know you’re old when the gf/wife wants to accompany DnD with a cheese board and a bottle of wine for the guests :))

The trick to breaking this cycle is to suggest a time to hang when you first propose the idea. This makes it far more likely to actually happen I find.

For real. It’s so frustrating how someone will just text “let’s hang out” or “let’s play games tonight” and it’s always me who has to go the extra step of “OK sure how about 7?”

This is your life on Capitalism
In a fair society we would be free for more than 5/7ths of our entire lives.

- Have hobbies, interests, or work that interests you, which can be done with other people.
- Search for groups, spaces, or jobs in your area that do those things. If none exist, make a group/space and advertise it somehow.
- Consistently attend regularly scheduled gatherings.
- Talk about things other than the thing sometimes when you get together.
- Do this for a while. You now have friends.
Note that this works best when the activity requires some kind of teamwork, group effort, communication, or shared work/suffering.
