    • a $2000 bed
    • with a $19/month subscription
    • full of security holes
    • that allows the company to ssh into your bed
    • which is a full linux computer
    • that totally could give those guys access into your local network
    • the CEO is flirting with DOGE and is offering them free beds
    • they are tracking your sleep data

    WTF?

Offering quasi-government officials free beds to hack them is very cyberpunk

I want to move to a timeline where this is part of a bad movie plot, not part of the news.

Some idiot bought a $2000 bed. IoT or not, it’s a nice bonus.

On an unrelated note, that image looks fairly convincingly like pixel art until you zoom into it. On the other hand, the pixel art people are making with comfyUI (locally) is insane. I messed around with it and you can generate 2d and 3d game assets of anything you can think of. I played around with the idea of making a retro twin peaks game and the stuff i generated was mind blowing.

You can build a simple bed presence sensor using one of those pressure mats used to hook up to alarms in nursing homes and a water/leak detector (I use the aqara detector for this). You just have to strip off the end of the cable from the mat, find the wires that do the circuit inside of the mat (I just used the leak sensor to find them) and wire it up to the sensor. Boom, bed presence sensor!

I bought a few of the pressure pads used for heated seats in cars and then hooked it up to a zigbee door window sensor. I just soldered the sensor ends to the reed switch. I use them for smart fatigue mats so my work bench powers up when I step on the mat and then 20min of non stepping has it power off the bench. Keeps me from forgetting to turn off my bench PSU and solder iron.

You need a bed presence sensor? I mean, I guess you’d want to be notified if suddenly your bed was not present, but I can’t imagine that it happens that often.

There are better gadgets to track your sleep. If you want to just track how you’re sleeping, get a cheap fitbit. Withings or Apple Watch are also able to detect sleep apnea

Do people still think Bezos is running Amazon? I’m sure he still has some influence but I actually think Amazon actually got even worse since he stepped down from CEO.

I was intrigued by those things a while ago but the subscription + cloud BS was a no-go for me. That aquarium chiller is a cool idea, but not many of those covers on ebay.

Sounds like an opportunity for someone to crowdfund a privacy respecting cover+chiller package.

Hmm that aquarium chiller solution is interesting to me. I’d like to wire it up to home assistant, so I could automate it. Wonder if there are any that I could control with an IR blaster?

Would miss out on some of the fun data you get from the complete solution though.

I also saw there was some firmware available for the complete solution, for local control. But unsure if I can realistically justify that large of a purchase while relying on a project that may lose support.

I’m aware of the bed jet, but it doesn’t seem as useful as it just pushes air, so if your room is already hot you are out of luck.
