funnily enough, GIF is a lossles file format. but it only allows 8-bit color.

The compression usually happens before it is saved as a gif. It can use 8-bit colours, but it takes up less space if you use fewer.

Yep, I think so, I haven’t looked at the standard, just assuming from the gif save dialog in photoshop.
