Isn’t Chani a non-believer in the movie, at least at first?

Zendaya was great in spiderman but she’s the absolute worst choice for chani. Her “too cool for school” sarcastic persona doesn’t fit with a primitive tribal religious fanatic at all.

Even if she is, she was raised in the same culture as stilgar and the others

I was raised in a deeply conservative fanatically religious culture and I put out a sarcastic and “too cool for school” energy a lot of the time. What do you think counterculture is? I remember in the movie she’s got a whole social circle of people who are on the same page as her.
Personally I think Zendaya plays Chani pretty well, and her character doesn’t feel out of place to me.

You had access to a counter culture, though. All the fremen know is other fremen and maybe the occasional harkkonen. I appreciate what you’re saying, but I still feel like it doesn’t seem organic in context.

She’s a sassy, rebellious New Yorker, when Chani is mature, strong and feminine AF. Just because they’re 15 doesn’t mean they’re supposed to be played like any Western “f u mom!” kid… Denis really dropped the ball there, but he’s more of visual director than a storyteller, I guess.

I’m pretty sure she’s from California? Unless you’re being metaphorical or something.

Since when does Spider-Man takes place in California?

They got confused and thought they were talking about actual Zendaya.

It’s a relief then that Dune is one of the dumbest fucking stories of all time and casting doesn’t matter.
Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 months ago
I’m curious what you think the greatest story ever is. I hope it’s not The Bible.
yeahiknow3@lemmings.world 10 months ago
Ironic comment, since Dune’s story is biblical supernatural nonsense written by a racist reactionary narcissist who probably does think the Bible is the greatest book of all time.
pahlimur@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I’d not looked into Frank before now, but I’ve read 2.5 of the dune books. It’s weird to see he was a self described conservative and libertarian. The whole dune story seems to mock everything he stands for politically. It’s like he was completely unaware of the power structures he was writing about exist across all US (and non-US) political parties.
snek_boi@lemmy.ml 10 months ago
It seems like you really don’t like it. What makes you say that?
yeahiknow3@lemmings.world 10 months ago
Dune is Twilight for boys. Although the movies are better than the books though, the actual story is spectacularly awful. Have you ever had someone try to explain it to you? It’s unhinged. And the book is so poorly written from a literary perspective.
MehBlah@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Don’t you mean boomers. Dune was published in 1965.
AlexLost@lemm.ee 10 months ago
This is just a sad take. The writing is brilliantly grounded in reality for a fantastical story. It’s fricken weird AF, but many of us are here for that. It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay if you don’t like it, but calling it poorly written is infantile.
FreakinSteve@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I agree. Really dumb stuff. Certainly not watching the Villeneuve movies for the plot. Cults, royalty, magic, psychic powers, people turning into worms, guiding star travel via ESP…geez
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 10 months ago
To non US people who aren’t exposed to the same celebrity overexposure (unless it’s by choice) and have no particular opinion on Zendaya, she’s ok. Haven’t seen part 2 though.
the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
It’s not celebrity overexposure in my case. I like Zendaya, I’m not tired of her and would like to see her in more stuff. I just think she was the wrong actress to play chani.
