- Comment on Fox star trashes Trump’s 50-year mortgage plan: ‘I do not like this idea’ 4 days ago:
Aside from all the other ways this proposal is stupid, a 30-year mortgage at least makes some sense compared to the timescale of a typical working person–at least historically. You get your career going in your early-mid 20s. By 30ish you are stable enough in your life and career to make the investment into a house. You make those payments dutifully for 30 years, and then by typical retirement age you own your home free and clear, and your largest individual living expense is gone.
With a 50-year mortgage, you are guaranteed to have that debt hanging around your neck well into retirement, or worse.
And yes, I’m aware of all the hand-waving and outdated assumptions in that first paragraph, don’t @ me. Broadly speaking, the point is that the long-term implications of 50-year mortgages becoming common are pretty terrifying, since it’s virtually impossible to expect to pay one of these off during period you are gainfully employed.
You pay for 30 or 35 years, then default in retirement (or die). The banks earn exactly as much in interest from you during that time period, compared with a 30-year loan, plus they get your house at the end.

It was a simple typo. What he said was “Americans who have worked, fought, and bled for this country”.
What he meant to say was "Americans who happened to be born in this country.

Thanks, I didn’t realize the enterprise DASs could be locked down to certain drive models. That would definitely be a non-starter.

The only thing to watch out for using a laptop that is plugged in 24x7 is the battery. Battery management systems are generally pretty good, but Li-ion batteries can fail catastrophically. As long as you make a point to check on it periodically it’s probably fine.
I’m using an old laptop as a local interface for my network setup, since its in my basement, and I actually pulled the battery out entirely since I have a beefy UPS powering everything. Paranoid, maybe, but a Li-ion battery sitting on top of my equipment rack could do a ton of damage if it were to fail someday.

I played OG Doom for years with keyboard only. Up/Down arrow for forward/backwards, Left/Right to turn, and then holding Alt to strafe. RIght hand on the arrow keys and left hand controlling strafe/run/weapon selection.
I don’t honestly recall if mouselook was even an option back then, but I tried playing with those keyboard only controls recently and literally could not even. It’s kinda wild how hard it is to imagine anything other than WASD-mouse for a FPS these days.

If I was playing The Sims, and one of my Sims started showing up mistakeable signs of self awareness, I would panic and ctrl-alt-delete that shit so fast.
Maybe its better if we DMT-and-lasers our way into a plan before we start banging on the glass.

Yeah, Lidarr is easily the weakest of the *arrs in my experience. As a newbie to setting up that stack, it was definitely nice to have a similar interface and functionality between the apps, but the last few months have me ready to look for something different for music.
- Comment on Why I Ditched Spotify, and How I Set Up My Own Music Stack 2 months ago:
As far as I can tell, no. I haven’t been able to search or import releases since about April.
- Comment on Why I Ditched Spotify, and How I Set Up My Own Music Stack 2 months ago:
I think the issue they are referring to is that Lidarr’s API or interface with the MusicBrainz database has been broken for a few months now, which means it’s impossible to search or add new artists/releases to your Lidarr library.
And as far as I can tell, it’s still down. I have been unable to use Lidarr for anything since about April, except for finding releases that I had already added to my local database.

Sure, I totally agree that when you’re dealing many with orders of magnitude, the factor of 3 is dwarved by the other uncertainties.
But we’re talking about our solar system, and specifically the orbital mechanics of our planets and sun, where the quantities and scales only span a couple orders of magnitude in total. A factor of 3 absolutely makes a difference. That’s the difference between the orbit of Mercury and the orbit of Earth.
Then there’s the practical point that, regardless of scale, rounding a known constant by that much makes no sense at all, unless you’re trying to estimate huge numbers in your head. If you’re using even the simplest of calculator, estimating pi as 1 is a deliberate choice to reduce accuracy.
- Comment on Say hello to Bary 2 months ago:
Nah, there is no way any astronomer studying orbital mechanics in our solar system is rounding pi to 1. There is virtually no practical calculation you could do on the mechanics of the sun or planets where rounding a known constant by a factor of 3 would yield any useful result whatsoever.
Rounding pi to 1 only makes sense when the uncertainty in the numbers is large, not the magnitude of the numbers, and we know the masses and distances of the objects in our solar system to an amazing level of precision!
Plus, the fact that Jupiter is massive enough to actually exert an influence that large on the sun is pretty fucking cool!

Like a lot of people have already said, people are complicated and contradictory; they are rarely one thing.
So you can judge him for, and learn from, the way he has treated other people, while also being grateful for the love, respect, and good parenting he has shown you.
Another aspect is that people often make mistakes and grow from those experiences. It might help you resolve some of the dissonance to talk to him about those things. Many people have experienced that having kids radically changes their priorities. Some people are fiercely loyal to a few people, but couldn’t care less about everyone else.
