The guy who wrote this one is pretty busy, he probably shits it out all in one go. The headline is the important bit with these satirical articles.
- Comment on Let my Duolingo streak expire cos I don't want to give them any more AI training for free and this popped up 🙄 3 days ago:
The quality depends on the individual(s) developing the training content as well. I don’t know if it’s changed, but the Korean course used to be quite bad/lazy and had a lot of Konglish and English loanwords, even for words that had an actual Korean equivalent. I think official courses and textbooks, as well as videos and podcasts, are all much better ways of learning than through these flash card apps. A better use case is retention of existing language skills, I think.

There always is. No one is getting paid to do this, they’re giving up their free time and (often) money. Leaving it to the last minute to volunteer or donate is never sustainable long-term. If people really care so much and are willing to sacrifice either, they need to be proactive rather than wait for emergency pleas for help.

That’s true, I guess I was commenting more on the differences between the userbases. I’m not sure much can really be done about that in the short term. Lemmy is this way because it is small and is a sort of counterculture protest against mainstream social media. Until it grows and evolves out of that framing, its userbase will continue to look very different to reddit’s.
- Comment on lemm.ee is shutting down at the end of this month 4 days ago:
From my own POV, and something I noticed from the beginning here, is that in the wake of Reddit (and other places) treating its users as assets, it was important to grow a userbase across the Lemmysphere and Fediverse with a strong community spirit. To me that means more participation, more content-creation, and more willingness to be civil and cooperate. Not that these things didn’t happen to a significant extent, but it seems like a lot of .ee users and visitors, while willing to hang out at the place, were moreso just willing to soak up the content without putting in much effort to help make the place work. Or even just being toxic and destructive, as above.
A lot more could be said and debated about the whole situation, but sites like Reddit, as draconian as they might be at times, and whatever their other flaws, have proven that they’ve been able to establish a system that works stably over the long haul.
I guess it’s not really surprising, though. The Lemmy userbase is much smaller and very skewed towards certain types of people with extremely strong opinions and low levels of tolerance for anything that goes against their worldview. I don’t think reddit is necessarily doing anything better in that regard, it just benefits from having such a massive userbase filled with all kinds of people. The toxicity and off-topic intrusions of political/culture war stuff get drowned out over there, whereas here you’ll frequently see threads where 90% of the comments are arguing about things that are completely irrelevant to the actual topic because so much of userbase has an activist mindset that is always itching for a fight.

Probably because if they were enabled it would be filled with people soapboxing about their irrelevant hobbyhorses or offering to help just to keep the instance alive. Neither are useful or relevant. If people wanted the instance to survive then they should have been volunteering months ago, not at 11:59 on the Doomsday Clock.

Yes, the Movies community is very active and is the best place on Lemmy if you want to discuss films or the film industry.
- Comment on [Satire] Not enough stories about mushroom trial, Australians complain 1 week ago:
This is exactly what I’ve been thinking. The ABC’s ‘Mushroom Daily’ podcast was announced nearly two years in advance and massively hyped up, but now that the trial has begun and they’re actually releasing daily episodes I’ve realised that it’s actually nowhere near interesting enough to follow daily unless you are a massive true crime/legal news follower.

It was under Besser, in just his second episode. They investigated the way ABC management handled criticism over Antoinette Lattouf’s social media comments, which I guess you’re already familiar with given you referenced this previously.

Didn’t Media Watch report on this exact phenomenon earlier this year?
- Comment on Australia has had record flu cases this year – and that’s before winter arrives. What’s going on? 2 weeks ago:
I don’t think the flu vaccine ever had a particularly high turnout, though. It’s less to do with vaccine scepticism and more to do with the fact that it’s optional and requires most people to go out of their way to get done. Couple that with the fact that seemingly every year there is a media campaign to scare people into getting it, and I think a lot of people just switch off. The only group that consistently takes it in high numbers are over-65s.

I have a 2006 Forester, but a couple of my family members have the newer models. The size difference is quite significant when we’re parked side-by-side, mine looks like a small car these days.
- Comment on Why does Australia still have 2 major political parties despite preferential voting? 4 weeks ago:
Australia’s 4 largest parties are the Labor, Liberals, Nationals and Greens parties (in order of popularity).
The Greens are much more popular than The Nationals. ~12% of nationwide first preferences at this election vs 4%.
- Comment on Why does Australia still have 2 major political parties despite preferential voting? 4 weeks ago:
This is not a direct answer but you might be interested in the ABC series ‘Swingers’, released in the lead up to the most recent federal election. It has quite a bit of history about Australia’s political system and the attitudes of Australian voters.

- Comment on How many times will i hear about the evil left if the greens loose their leader 4 weeks ago:
I wouldn’t stress too much about it, I don’t think this will be a major setback for The Greens as a political movement. They are in a difficult stage of their evolution as a party where they are facing some issues balancing environmental and social issues, older and younger voters, hard left voters that will support them no matter what vs soft left voters who they’ve picked up from Labor over the past couple of decades, etc. Under the past couple of leaders they’ve had a strong desire to grow and become a real progressive force in Australian politics, but that is not necessarily a realistic goal while our system continues to favour the larger centre.
After jumping to 4 MPs in the 2022 election, I think they tried to go too hard, too soon which might have frustrated some of those softer left voters and pushed them back to Labor. Everyone is very focused on Trump’s impact on the right, but if this election was a rejection of culture wars then you have to question whether The Greens have also been caught up in that and were seen as too disruptive and divisive during the last term. I think they actually realised this prior to the election, which is why they tried to pivot to a “keep Dutton out” strategy and back off Labor, but the chaos in the US ultimately made it a difficult perception to dislodge from the minds of some of their softer voters.

How much are the factory workers paid? Where are the raw materials sourced? What percentage is recycled? What work is HMD doing to change the industry?

Better to get an older phone and hold onto it.
That’s sort of how they’ve marketed their phones over the years. Fairphone exists as a fairer alternative to brand new phones, but the company has always been quite clear that the most environmentally friendly phone you have is your current one and that you should keep it for as long as realistically possible.

But many people don’t want to have everything completely public
This isn’t true at all. Most people do not care about privacy; those that do are an extreme minority. You (presumably) and I are part of that minority yet even we still comment here, in a public space. The issue with forums has never been about privacy because most are content with pseudonymity. It is a big mistake to think we need to cater to the extreme minority in the privacy space when tackling big issues that involve a majority who do not care.
