- Comment on Infrastructure construction in Britain is defective. The most budget UK tramway is more expensive than the most costly french tramway 1 day ago:
I’m not sure if it’s a big reason, but one thing I noticed when living in the UK is that it seemed to be much easier for local landowners to block things from being built compared to other countries I’ve lived in.
I feel like the Thames path through London was kind of representative of that. I feel like anywhere else it would be a normal walking path along the river, but instead it has big gaps, sections that are private, or even some which are closed certain days.
Just the fact that they wanted to make HS2 go UNDERGROUND through large parts of the countryside was a wild idea.
- Comment on Horses ARE Forever 2 days ago:
The physical design was somewhat similar but if you look at old footage from cities you’ll see that walking on the street was completely normal.
There didn’t yet exist this idea that we have to leave 80% of the street exclusively for cars.
- Comment on YSK that in the US, denaturalization, the process of revoking a person's citizenship, does not require proof "Beyond reasonable doubt" 6 days ago:
I’m confused how you think that these two examples of internal uprisings are at all connected to some saying effectively “don’t count on international law to mean anything since there isn’t any body to enforce it”
- Comment on Multilingual people all must have experienced YouTube's f**kery with auto translation. Still no workaround? 1 week ago:
In general, US-based sites/companies are usually terrible with supporting multi-lingualism. It’s not really surprising I guess considering how monolingual most of the country/region is.
For years google maps has annoyed me, since I just wanted a good way to have German and English reviews not be translated, since both are common in my city and I speak both languages.
Somehow it randomly works sometimes and then suddenly will start translating them again. It’s very inconsistent.
- Comment on Why aren't there mass protests in the USA? 1 week ago:
I visited family/friends in the US recently (ice lived in europe for mant years).
Everyone is super upset about the current state of things, angry at Trump etc.
However, they are also generally just convinced they need to wait out these four years and then everything can return to normal.
- Comment on Starlink is now accessible across the White House campus, which was already served by fiber cable, after service was “donated”, as some cite security concerns. 2 weeks ago:
It’s literally not any different. Starlink is just a less-reliable broadband internet connection, it has nothing to do with WiFi
- Comment on Something's wrong with denmark 2 weeks ago:
As a non-native working in German, the numbers are one of the trickiest parts.
My jobs generally involve a lot of math and discussions of numbers, and I often struggle with swapping numbers around in my head. Especially because when you get to bigger numbers people often switch between (or use a combination of) listing individual digits left-to-right and saying multi-digit numbers.
The though is when you occasionally notice natives mess it up!

I can see what you’re saying, but at this point Elon is the most powerful person in the US, and certainly more powerful than any politician (even Trump).
I don’t think everyone realizes how unbelievably, dangerously rich Elon is. The dude is a moron, but he has enough money to buy out all of our politicians many many times over.
- Comment on Exclusive: Microsoft is finally shutting down Skype in May 4 weeks ago:
I only have to use this occasionally, but on my android I use the app “Talkatone” to make free calls to phones. They have paid plans to keep your number, but I tend to just use new ones whenever one expires.
It might not suit your needs, but it’s worked pretty reliably for me for the past 10 years or so.

- Comment on How does this pic show that Elon Musk doesnt know SQL? 1 month ago:
Not to mention, anyone who has worked in the US gets a SSN, not just citizens or current residents.
I know a bunch of people over here in europe who have them after working a few months/ years in the US.
- Comment on Is it time to ring the alarm on internet door cameras? 1 month ago:
It depends how you forward images. I assume they are referring to how many/most services (like whatsapp/discord/telegram etc) don’t just send the original file, but do some compression to save data. Do this a bunch of times and you end up with a photo that starts to show noticeable artifacts/pixellation.
That’s my take at least

- Comment on How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness 2 months ago:
It’s definitely true. There are so few places that are really walkable in the US and the demand is quite high… once you live that way, it’s hard to go back.
We really need to build more walkable areas, but it’s difficult for a lot of (mostly-nonsensical) reasons.
- Comment on How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness 2 months ago:
The two are closely connected.
You can’t really build affordable and convenient car-dependent style housing (think single-family suburbs) for everyone because they take too much space. So you’ll always end up with the situation where well-located houses are outrageously expensive and you get cheaper by buying something much further out. Essentially people are willing to pay a premium to no have to drive for a long time to get anywhere.
The only reason why conveniently-located suburbs were ever affordable (think 50s or 60s) is because most people back then didn’t have a car yet, so the demand wasn’t saturated.

Yeah weed easily smells at least as bad
- Comment on Thronefall's tiny tower defence townbuilding has reached version 1.0 5 months ago:
It’s really fun! I picked it up yesterday and I’ve been playing on ky deck.
I will say that I usually prefer tower defense games with more ‘linear’ pathing (think bloons) but it’s been a good time regardless.
