- Comment on Stack Overflow bans users en masse for rebelling against OpenAI partnership — users banned for deleting answers to prevent them being used to train ChatGPT 1 week ago:
Angry users claim they are enabled to delete their own content from the site through the “right to forget,” a common name for a legal right most effectively codified into law through the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Among other things, the act protects the ability of the consumer to delete their own data from a website, and to have data about them removed upon request. However, Stack Overflow’s Terms of Service contains a clause carving out Stack Overflow’s irrevocable ownership of all content subscribers provide to the site
It reality irritates me when ToS simply state they will do against the law.

You can’t except learning the science of abstraction by making it concrete. Exampled are not more than examples and if one field required abstract theory, it is indeed the mathematics.

- Comment on Why do Americans measure everything in cups? 5 weeks ago:
Fun fact : in France we mesure by weight except for the “gâteau au yaourt”. The yoghurt cake is the most basic cake with each family having it’s own recipe, a bit like maybe muffins in other places and this cake is entierly mesured in volumes.
- Comment on Why do Americans measure everything in cups? 5 weeks ago:
And the volume of butter changes a lot when melted. If thé recipe dont precise the form, you’ll need multiple try juste to know if you recipe actually works.

- Comment on Poignant post on the state of things 3 months ago:
Sure but it is still a cultural think. OOP speak about the West having housing issue but the West is also the cultural space where being housed by your parent is a form of unhealthy dependence, while in many places in the world, staying home with your parent is wide spread over the population whether the housing market is safe or not.
- Comment on Poignant post on the state of things 3 months ago:
I don’t find it so poignant. The idea of living your parent house to adult properly is cultural. Their is nothing fondamental weird about most people still living with their parents until they passed away. Sure not every siblings can benefit from it if they also want to get spouse and children. But one people arriving in a house to marry is leaving room in another one. And as sad as it is when the elders leave, their is more space for the new-born.
Of course, it is important that people are housed and not dependent of landlord but why the solution should be that every couple ( and every adult that is single) buy its own house. That’s a far stretch. Especially in countries where demography isn’t booming.

Maybe I’m not the typical user but that is something that got me into Lemmy. I started to use Lemmy without an account, reading and discovering new communities and specialized instances until I’ve got my favorite instances. Then I’ve found my current instance, fell in love with it and finally decided to join the fediverse.
- Comment on 5 months ago:
Have you consider another instance? Instances with a more memorable or meaningful name makes Lemmy name not look so important. There is for example many national “feddit” instance whose name is “un pied-de-nez” to Reddit. jlai.lu is a french speaking instance name in the tradition of forceful translation that was born withing french subreddits and so one.

Thank you for this message.
I believe that the fediverse will not exploit its full potential until fedizens start to fediverse accross the different plateforms.
Of course, as the biggest plateform by far, Mastodon has a role to play. Interoperability accross multiple social media is what makes the fediverse fondamentally different from traditional social network and not yet another attempt at managing a social media plateform right. - Comment on Lemception 5 months ago:
