For context, I am an old white man engineer. I’ve worked in large and small companies over my career. Almost without fail, even with DEI policies in place, a non-white person or woman still had to be 10x more qualified than their white male counterparts to be hired. Once in the organization, they were generally put into some dead end role while far less qualified white men were advanced to higher positions. When I worked in the bible belt southeastern USA, you had the added factor of protestant christians ruling the roost too.
- Comment on Study Claims 4K/8K TVs Aren't Much Better Than HD To Your Eyes 1 day ago:
The study used a 44 inch TV at 2.5m. The most commonly used calculator for minimum TV to distance says that at 2.5m the TV should be a least 60 inches.
My own informal tests at home with a 65 inch TV looking at 1080 versus 4K Remux of the same movie seems to go along with the distance calculator. At the appropriate distance or nearer I can see a difference if I am viewing critically (as opposed to casually). Beyond a certain distance the difference is not apparent.

Our Japan office went through a renovation after many years of the same old (like 30 year old) desks sitting side by side in an open space to a more modern open space. One big change though: no one has an assigned work space. You put your stuff in a box and then work out of that at whatever position you get that day. Meanwhile, the boss, went from sitting with everyone else to have his own private office with all his MLB, NFL, and other crap all over the walls and shelves.
Luckily I don’t work in the Japan office.

While Lemmy might be getting a larger variety of personalities, some of them being jerks, I still find it a far more pleasant place to be than reddit.

I would disagree since getting a speaker with a “good” 10 or 12 inch driver is difficult or very expensive and impractical since those large drivers don’t do well with mids and upper mids. The Tannoy, Klipsch heritage line, and similar old school designs with large drivers all measure like crap.

My Revel F208 speakers don’t really need a subwoofer for music but having a 12 inch 500 watt subwoofer to support them for movies does add to the dramatic impact. My apartment neighbors haven’t complained so I assume they are enjoying the music and movies too.

That’s a rabbit hole I managed to avoid. I lived in Shanghai in the 00’s when you could still get nice counterfeit mechanical watches there. Then I got a nice Seiko mechanical watch but no matter what I did, I just didn’t love the auto-winding function. Then came the solar watches from Seiko and Citizen which were relatively cheap. Now I’m here with a smart watch and never looking back.

D or G because those both can grow coffee.
Tough call though.
D is lots of different Chinese regional dishes: Shanghai style, south China styles, Xi’an Muslim styles, and all the different dumplings; Vietnamese food, Thai food, Indian food, Aussie and New Zealand wines, Aussie steaks, New Zealand lamb, Malay, Indonesian dishes, Cebu BBQ, plus Lebanese and Persian food. That is a lot of variety.
G gets you New Orleans dishes, California wine, Cali tacos, Tex Mex, southeastern USA BBQ, Low Country Boil, Mexican food, Caribbean food, central American, chocolate, and I am guessing Hawaiian dishes.
And now I’m hungry.

Yup. I used AirBnB when they first started and it wasn’t terrible but then it became a huge hassle. Don’t give me a list of chores and then I might get penalty fees if I don’t do them right. Plus all the other damn fees. I don’t even bother to look at ABnB any more
