- Comment on To prevent mashed potatoes from being gummy, boil the potatoes whole. 11 months ago:
Can't even tell they're in there by the time they're done. Plus, the skin has more protein and nutrients than the rest of the potato. All the stuff that's good for you is in the skin. Whole point of this recipe is you can eat them without knowing they're even there.
- Comment on To prevent mashed potatoes from being gummy, boil the potatoes whole. 11 months ago:
Boil in chunks with the skin still on. Drain and mash immediately while still way too hot with a hand masher, butter and raw egg. Stir in grated cheese and bake for 20 minutes at like 325-350.

- Comment on A scandal about Bill Gates would be called Bill Gates-gate. 11 months ago:
Watergate is just the name of a hotel/shop/office complex in DC. The Watergate scandal had nothing to do with water, it's just named after the place where it occurred. The -gate suffix for scandals is dumb.

- Comment on will the fediverse stop existing?? 11 months ago:
Wasn't referring to what Meta could do or even necessarily that there's an issue with Lemmy's software. More that there's a bunch of servers with various configurations without resources dedicated to intrusion detection, mitigation or reporting. If something did happen at a server level to a hobbyist instance there's no reason to believe users or maybe even the person's running the instance would know about it.
- Comment on will the fediverse stop existing?? 11 months ago:
Probably. Not sure if this will do it. But there's inherent privacy concerns in having a bunch of relatively insecure silos interoperating as a semi-social network even if most of us do so with varying degrees of anonymity. For the moment, most of us are here to avoid corporate overreach so motivations are in a certain degree of alignment. But it's just a matter of time before something goes wrong or the winds change in an unforeseen way.

Someone's just going to steal whatever you make anyway.
- Comment on How to Kill a Decentralised Network (such as the Fediverse) 11 months ago:
Is there anyway to implement (without spinning up your own private instance) the ability for individual users to opt out of federation of their content to certain instances, or would that introduce too much overhead and complication?

- Comment on While everyone is watching the world stage and some are predicting WWIII, isn't there a good chance that the USA is getting close to some kind of civil war? 11 months ago:
Civil war didn't happen when Gore "lost" on some technical bullshit, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Bloodborne.
Beat it and the DLC years ago. This time I've done all the chalice dungeons and am progressing through the NG+X replays. It keeps getting better and the music in game is just so, so good.

- Comment on So uhh.. how often should I be washing me towels? 11 months ago:
I'd generally heard 'laundry stripping' used to refer to a vinegar soak/rinse, followed by a baking soda cycle to further neutralize. The idea being laundry soap/detergent is basic and some things build up and don't dissolve. Added borax was an alternative 'laundry booster' that made this unnecessary, in my experience.
But, it sounds like there's some variability to how the terms are used and for some the borax rinse is a stripping process. Understandable, as the end result is pretty much the same.
- Comment on So uhh.. how often should I be washing me towels? 11 months ago:
You can also avoid this problem by adding a little borax to your laundry, particularly if you have hard water.
- Comment on So uhh.. how often should I be washing me towels? 11 months ago:
I shoot for 2-3 uses for body/shower towels.
Hand towels, etc I try to grab/replace when I'm doing other laundry. Sometimes more often in the kitchen though, if say I've been cooking a lot and they start feeling wet or funky.

Modlogs are public here, for one. As communities get bigger and modding gets more labor intensive there's bound to be some convergence in practices, but there's also different options available as instances can defederate, new instances can be established, forks can be made of the technologies at play, etc.
Guess we'll see.
