I think a lot of people have a few killer apps that just don’t work on Linux even with WINE. Hell, I’ve heard that VR is not worth it on Linux.
- Comment on Bluesky and Mastodon users are having a fight that could shape the next generation of social media 8 months ago:
I feel like the people who got scared of Bluesky joining the AP fediverse don’t even actually want a fediverse. They want a bog-standard, non-federating bulletin board instead.
- Comment on Bluesky and Mastodon users are having a fight that could shape the next generation of social media 8 months ago:
From what I saw, fedi people were mostly freaking the fuck out while most of the Bluesky users were just making fun of the whole ordeal.
- Comment on 8 months ago:
AFAIK, no bridges to Bluesky are actually active yet, and Bridgy Fed is considering ways of going opt-in.
- Comment on Apple fans are starting to return their Vision Pros 9 months ago:
Yeah I’m looking at that as well. Friend of mine does say if you want to do full-body tracking the Quest is a pain to do it with, but I’m not deep in PCVR right now haha.
- Comment on Apple fans are starting to return their Vision Pros 9 months ago:
I’m thinking on buying a Quest to dip into PCVR. I’ve heard horror stories about the Index’s poor QC (which is weird given the Steam Deck’s done me well so far) and PSVR2 isn’t compatible with PC. Yes, iVRy exists but that driver is in development and the developer basically said “just buy a Quest if you want a cheap PC VR headset”.
- Comment on Bridgy Fed, a bridge between the Fediverse and other protocols such as BlueSky, is using an opt-out model and that raises a lot of discussion 9 months ago:
I think the fediverse, and that includes Lemmy, have this warped idea of what Bluesky is and what ActivityPub/the fediverse actually is. They think ActivityPub is the de-facto protocol for microblogging, when it has glaring issues that Bluesky wanted to solve with Atproto (the queer.af debacle is a great example of this, imagine if you’ve got an account on queer.af and you want to move your data to a new instance). If you’re a Linux guy, you might have seen parallels between ActivityPub/Mastodon vs. Atproto/Bluesky and X11 vs. Wayland.

It’s exactly this. Bluesky has its problems but there is a massive overreaction from the fediverse crowd that it makes it hard for me to sympathise with them even if I agree on the principle.

I got Subnautica for free twice (PlayStation and Epic), I should really look at giving it a proper try. I have the feeling it’d be really good in VR, played No Man’s Sky in VR recently and I immediately loved it while on flatscreen it didn’t click with me as much.

- Comment on Japanese disaster prevention X account can’t post anymore after hitting API limit - The issue has arisen after major Tsunami warnings have been issued in areas of Japan following a strong earthquake 10 months ago:
To be honest, social media including Mastodon is pretty awful for right-on-the-second emergency notifications but good for any extended information that wouldn’t fit in those. Japan does have things in place for before then, similarly to America, but depending on the system you could link to that link just fine.

Does that go through regular EAS? Wondering.
FWIW, Japan does have emergency alerts on iOS and Android, same thing as the Netherlands and the UK.

Pleroma should work, but I’d also raise an issue with GoToSocial about the specific issues you’re facing as well.
- Comment on The Fediverse is working just as intended. 11 months ago:
Agreed. I think Lemmy is more public than Mastodon and co. which do have some privacy settings, but ActivityPub is inherently a public protocol. Appreciate everything you’ve done for Poptalk btw!
- Comment on The Fediverse is working just as intended. 11 months ago:
Essentially, Facebook’s Twitter competitor Threads is gearing up to join the fediverse by integrating ActivityPub into their platform. Don’t take my word too much on this but I believe this is due to the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act which requires interoperability (similar to how iOS now requires sideloading in the EU). This is essentially their cheap way of complying.
The fediverse has a strong hatred of Facebook, for various reasons (from petty things like “embrace, extend, extinguish” to much more serious things like Facebook’s compliance in the Myanmar genocide) and a “pact” was enacted of fediverse instances that are simply outright blocking Threads. Part of it is the fear that Facebook will federate its moderation problem and cause a headache (which, in my opinion, would be better dealt with by limiting Threads to followers only - Mastodon and Pleroma allow this).
Opponents of the Fedipact are optimistic this will help a more mainstream audience warm up to the fediverse. The fediverse has a reputation of being unwieldy and complicated to newcomers, and having a major platform like Threads integrating ActivityPub might help bring them in and see what it’s like. Toxicity is cited as a reason for defederating Threads, but IMO I see more toxicity towards newcomers and outsiders coming from the people already on the fediverse, so I’ve been quite apathetic to the Threads thing.
- Comment on The fediverse in a nutshell 11 months ago:
On Lemmy, it’s shown. On Mastodon, instances are given the ability to hide their blocked instances which IMO hinders people’s ability to join. A lot of the drama on the fediverse with regards to blocking is from Mastodon and similar instances.
People claim the instance you join doesn’t matter because “everything is federated!” but it kind of does. It strongly affects the people who will see your posts and even who you can follow, and if you don’t know what an instance is blocking it creates an air of uncertainty. I’ve seen instances get blocked for stupid at best and downright malicious at worst reasons, so the 4chan post isn’t inherently wrong.
- Comment on what is the fedipact? 11 months ago:
Limited essentially means the instance is put in quarantine. AFAIK it won’t appear on the federated timelines but users can still follow and communicate to them if they desire.
- Comment on If your instance is defederated from another instance, would it be sockpuppeting to create another account to view posts from that instance? 11 months ago:
Yeah the detailed explanation would be very helpful. It’s nice that Lemmy has the page at least (and I learned something new today), though that is just Lemmy and the fediverse is much bigger than that. I believe Misskey and Pleroma share it similarly to Lemmy, while Mastodon allows admins to hide it from the public (which, as I said, will act as a barrier to those wanting to sign up)
- Comment on If your instance is defederated from another instance, would it be sockpuppeting to create another account to view posts from that instance? 11 months ago:
Yeah there’s a similar tool for the wider microblogging part of fediverse (Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, etc.) but because it was made by an edgelord it gets dismissed. I get the vibe some instances just don’t want to share that information, which is important when you’re basically dealing with web infrastructure, and get mad when you seek that information out.
- Comment on If your instance is defederated from another instance, would it be sockpuppeting to create another account to view posts from that instance? 11 months ago:
tbh this is a general issue with the fediverse. Some instances aren’t transparent about who is being blocked and why. It made it a whole lot more difficult for me to figure out what instance I should go for.

- Comment on ListenBrainz passes 25k users! 11 months ago:
That’s odd. How did you install ScrobblerBrainz? The newer versions require TagLib# to be bundled, so maybe it’s silently failing there or something. I wonder if that’s the case because someone else on GitHub had a similar issue that was fixed by just installing it again.

The frontend is basically Elk which I’m trying on my microblog/Mastodon account. It’s really nice.
- Comment on Mozilla.social sent out a slew of account invites to their waitlist 11 months ago:
Vivaldi used their Web Panels feature to promote their instance, and Mastodon has a decent vertical UI so it made it easy for them to add it through that it seems.

- Comment on Mastodon founder touts Threads' federation, saying it makes his X rival 'a far more attractive option' 11 months ago:
I wouldn’t mind followers-only federation of Threads. My issue would be that the flow of posts from there (if it reaches the federated timeline anyway) would be a burden for moderation.

.fmbot is essentially a social bot for Discord that you can drop into a server. It’s essentially the site but as a Discord bot, with some little trinkets here and there. It’s all good fun, really, if you like the social aspect. I pay for the bot as my Last.fm account is relatively new, and it allows importing your listens from Spotify (through a GDPR request for extended listening history). I have requested ListenBrainz user dump support; they have considered supporting ListenBrainz but the main issue is that the API limits are worse than Last.fm’s.
A lot of music servers use it for the social aspect. Chuu (named after the k-pop star) is a similar bot.
- Comment on ListenBrainz passes 25k users! 11 months ago:
Fair enough - I use both for different reasons, and am also thinking on getting Last.fm Pro in the future.
ListenBrainz has the ability of submitting more accurate data (i.e. specific recordings and releases, tied to MusicBrainz ofc) while last.fm has the better developer ecosystem (a lot of apps support it e.g. third party Apple Music Clients, the .fmbot Discord bot which I do pay monthly for). Not a huuuuge fan of Last.fm’s way of handling artist names that have collabs or featured artists in them, but that might be the obsessive data nerd in me I guess (and I guess last.fm Pro can fix that)
