This was such a great time loop movie
- Comment on Google Maps tests new pop-up ads that give you an unnecessary detour 4 months ago:
They get the traffic data from some third party, not by following their users like gmaps.
Do you share data with third parties?
We send position data to our traffic provider to generate real-time traffic information. The data is anonymized on the phone, using a changing key (so it’s not linked to you), and it is deleted after 5 minutes.
- Comment on How to sync Akregator across devices? 5 months ago:
Self host FreshRSS, use the GReader or Fever API that’s built into FreshRSS to sync to other apps. If you want to access the sync remotely, use Tailscale or setup Wireguard.

- Comment on Prime Video subs will soon see ads for Amazon products when they hit pause 5 months ago:
I live near multiple regional hubs. I have no subscription myself. It takes them 4-7 days to get my package to me.
My friends who live on the same block as me gets them in 1-2 days with their prime memberships
- Comment on Prime Video subs will soon see ads for Amazon products when they hit pause 5 months ago:
Wait… I already now get annoying ads in the middle of watching a show. Now they want to add more ads to Prime Video? That’s absolutely ridiculous.
- Comment on Mullvad VPN: Introducing Defense against AI-guided Traffic Analysis (DAITA) 6 months ago:
I personally like AirVPN. Pretty good speeds depending on the server. Has port forwarding. You can port forward and have up to 5 devices connected simultaneously. Make sure you’re using the Wireguard protocol.
Only issue is that Eddie (their GUI) kinda sucks. Works okay on Linux, and probably same on Windows. The Android one just really sucks.
I personally just download the wireguard configs to use.

Ever since the Reddit exodus, so many people joined Lemmy and so many people assume everyone lives in the US.
- Comment on Homeowner baffled after washing machine uses 3.6GB of internet data a day 7 months ago:
I’m all for smart appliances, but a smart washing machine is a solution in search of a problem.
I personally love smart washers. We have 5 adults at home. The app lets us know if it’s being used or not, and let’s us know how much longer left.

Do note that although custom ROMs helps provides OS updates, it does not help with any firmware updates to your phone parts as those are vendor released, and once they stop providing updates, it is no longer secure
I have a OnePlus 3T (2016) that is running Android 11 custom ROM. I use it mainly for some games and browsing. I would never use it as my main phone though. Don’t want to risk all of my info/data on there.
- Comment on EA flop Immortals of Aveum reportedly cost around $125 million, former dev says "a AAA single-player shooter in today's market was a truly awful idea" 8 months ago:
From the article:
“At a high level, Immortals was massively overscoped for a studio’s debut project,” the former employee said. "The development cost was around $85 million, and I think EA kicked in $40 million for marketing and distribution…
They must have done extremely bad marketing because I’ve never heard of this game

They are part of the [Free File Alliance] lead by Intuit to prevent the IRS from creating their own free tax filing tool.
Though, not like we have much choice when it comes to free tax filing until IRS gets their direct file up and running for all.
- Comment on TurboTax maker Intuit spent millions in record lobbying blitz amid threats to tax prep industry 8 months ago:
Aren’t those all part of the Intuit lead coalition, the Free File Alliance, which kept lobbying against the IRS creating their own free tax filing tool among other issues?
- Comment on Why Everyone Should Still Use an RSS Reader in 2024 9 months ago:
Feeder on my phone (Android-only)
If you host an RSS aggregator yourself such as FreshRSS, I’d recommend using ReadYou or FeedMe (not Open Source) instead so that you can sync. I use FeedMe on Android and Fluent Reader on Linux. It’s nice to have everything synced.
I also recommend rss-bridge if you’re self hosting. Helps gets you more rss feeds from websites that don’t have them.

You can technically just make yourself a mod of your own private subreddit, then NSFW works fine with the API. It works with RedReader. I still use Reddit for very niche subreddits.

- Comment on Self-hosted media tracker recommendations? 10 months ago:
Yup! Whereas with Media Tracker, everything is pretty much almost instantaneous for me.
Ryot was too slow for me. It’s really bad when you try to mark multiple TV series seasons as “seen” at the same time as well.

- Comment on Self-hosted media tracker recommendations? 10 months ago:
I have used Ryot for a while. It is nice and has a lot of features.
I am using Media Tracker because it has most of the features I need and it’s very fast. I wish it had genre sections like Ryot though. It looks like someone created an issue for it at least. Might go back to Ryot eventually, but we’ll see. Luckily Ryot has a Media Tracker import option.
- Comment on Self-hosted media tracker recommendations? 10 months ago:
I personally use Media Tracker because it’s fast and have enough features for me.
Ryot is another one that’s good.
Flox hasn’t had a commit since 2020. It’s not being updated anymore.
