12 pounds (5.4 kilos) of butterscotch candy. Will any flavor come through on distillation or will it be as bland as my jolly rancher moonshine? only time will tell. Buddy of mine is turning 30 and his favorite candy is werthers so I did the only logical thing and decided to try fermenting/distilling a ton as part of his birthday gift
Why not take the lemoncello approach and flavor the distillate afterward?
Oh I’ll probably end up doing that too! It’s mainly for science and fun, I’ve also distilled flamin’ hot Cheetos so I may have a screw or ten loose up in the head, just something about making liquor/beer/wine from non traditional ingredients gets me fired up and in the mood to brew lol.
I’ve made cotton candy with them. 60% of the flavor survived the heating.

Different candies, when crushed and remelted through a cotton candy machine have different levels of flavor in the final product. Specifically they seem to lose much of their aromatic properties. I suspect the original flavoring used on the cooked sugar is incredibly concentrated and a lot gets lost in the original product.
If the candies had the same intensity as they did in their drop form, I’d say they’re 100%.
If the candies ended up smelling and tasting like straight sugar, I’d say they were 0%
When I rank 50%, It generally means that it identifiably smells and tastes like the original candy and is at least reasonably enjoyable.
If you gave a bag of Werthers cotton candy to a random person who was familiar with them, they’d know what it was and likely be able to pick it out over other generic butterscotch.
I was decent, I’d have picked it over berry or cherry flavoring, but It didn’t knock my socks off, I didn’t strongly desire seconds.

If you’re on to something here, maybe the old timers will offer it next to their candy dishes. The younger generations joke about old people always having butterscotch candies when we know damn well everyone eats a couple of them when they are visiting.
So you’re saying next I have to distill strawberry bon bons? I swear, my grandpa had an endless supply of werthers and my grandma always had the bon bons lol

...huh. I can actually kind of see this working. Also I have a friend who loves werther's amd I think he'll be getting married soon, so if your version turns out to be good I'm definitely making some for his stag do

I’ll try to let you know! I wanna say Jesse who does Still It on YouTube had good success with something similar so I’m hopeful for sure. Think I’m gonna let it ferment another 2 weeks then distill it and let it sit on small bag of the candies for another 2 if the flavor isn’t where I want it to be. If you don’t see an update and are genuinely curious just tag me if I don’t post an update on it by early August lol
