I love watching Windows users complain about it, and continue using it.
There are a lot of people who don’t know that there are alternatives or are intimidated by them

It wasn’t a sincere remark, more of a statement of frustration. People think Linux runs no “useful” applications and it’s just a hobby of some nerds.

Or who absolutely must use Windows for work.

I had to buy a laptop for my kid to use for some online testing that required windows 11. They install some rootkit like malware that only runs on a baremetal install. So virtual machines were out, Linux was not supported.
So I plunged into that cesspool. Holy crap what a shitshow just to get an install.
Its true they force you to use a ms account to complete install. You must have WiFi enabled or might as well return it. Took 2 hours to download whatever it needed to complete the setup. Hadd to create 2 online accounts because the 1st one errored for an unknown reason.
After it booted I discovered S mode. You must sign in online and enable Hello to get out of S mode to install anything other than ms apps.
To use local account, you need to click around 4 or 5 different areas in order to remove online, then hello, then the passkey, then remove the ms account. I haven’t even begun cleaning up the diags, spyware, ads, suggestions, etc…
I feel dirty now.

They do, but at least for now, the workaround isn’t hard (passing the localonly param). I just bought a laptop this week and did it.

Most of that is sadly how they operate, but S mode is for corporate/school settings and isn’t the default install type.

I like mentioning sometimes that there’s a small delay when you click the Start button, because it’s a React component. My coworker told me he cannot unsee it now.

And unstable. The amount of shit that crashes on Win11 is absolutely abysmal. Windows Explorer is my enemy on the computers we have a work. At least once a month Windows Explorer crashes or freezes, the task bar disappears and I have to reset it, or fucking on windows on the task bar doesn’t bring them back up (I have to Alt-tab just to get to and window that is behind another).
It wouldn’t be a huge issue if it was consistent. I’m fine with dealing with technical issues on a regular basis. The problem is that some problems persist while others show up and disappear. And the problems are different on every computer but are all frustrating to deal with. Its always been a thing with Windows but these days I straight up can’t even do certain tasks at work on certain computers because they simple do not work anymore with Win11

I just created a Restart Explorer shortcut and placed it on my desktop, that opens and closes a cmd window in the process, for these very purposes! I was proud to be able to create that shortcut but that’s about it. I’m not very technologically inclined either. Just somewhat.

No shit. Win10 made explorer slow as shit somehow, and the start menu was slowing in 8.1 already. Win11 slowed them both even more and they’re firing more javashit at us because someone thinks it’s an acceptable front end language. It’s fucking not. It’s just a lot of people know it.

Who uses windows en who uses linux here ?
redlemace@lemmy.world 2 days ago
At work i’m mostly forced to windows. Privatly linux over 20 years and have not owned any windows at least the last deccade
BagOfHeavyStones@piefed.social 2 days ago
Mostly linux at home, windows at work due to needing windows apps that can’t run on linux.

Windows and macOS on the home machines, but Linux servers at home. I can’t be bothered to spend time on computers in my spare time. It took me 3 months to migrate 2 vms and a NAS to new hardware. I know it’s better but the tweaking of Linux was a pain 10 years ago and I find less joy in it than ever.

Comparing the Linux of 10 years ago with today is like comparing an NES with a Nintendo Switch.
It’s improved drastically, and it’s even used now on a well known consumer product - the Steam Deck.
It’s also gotten to the point is easier to use than Windows. I installed Bazzite for 7 people last year - none tech savvy - and all of them have liked it more than Windows, despite having only used Windows before. 2 of them also had hardware work with it that suddenly stopped working after a Windows update (wired headphones).

Both. I have to use Windows at work. I mainly use Linux at home.
