Bemused is another one novel writers get wrong pretty consistently. It means confused, or bewildered, not amused.
So where is the negative?
I think about this kind of thing too often. Take “chlamydia” and “genocide”. Two words with horrible meanings, but they’re really nice words. Flowery and regal. They sound like Victorian girls’s names. “Cousin Peter arrived, with his lovely daughters, Chlamydia and Genocide”.

Aloof isn’t negative. Just completely unaffected by all the bullshit around them. There is nothing negative about not giving a fuck.
