In New Zealand it’s pretty common to have a midwinter Christmas, even if you have never lived in the Northern Hemisphere. Not that everyone or almost everyone would do it, but in my experience most people would have at least heard of the concept (and I know people who do it most years, and others that do it occasionally).
This is in addition to, not instead of the normal summer Christmas.
Two Christmases? I’m going.
When I lived in the UK we just did British Christmas, so it was during winter. That said, my family was pretty limited in terms of Christmas engagement.

Australian Xmas customs? What do we do that’s specifically Australia? Prawns, booze, and pool beers?
Australian xmas is a mishmash, you take cold traditions and make them warm, the food is similar but different, outdoor sports or swimming are common, it’s easy to get around
For my money breakie and presents with one family then lunch with another, prawns from the barbie, roast ham served cold with salad, beers by the pool and backyard cricket make for a distinctly Australian xmas
If that’s just a Winter Xmas to people from the Northern Hemisphere I’d be surprised
Last I checked, Australia isn’t in the Northern Hemisphere…

In Australia, some people of European and/or North American backgrounds celebrate Christmas in July so that they can have Christmas when it’s cold and miserable, just like where they came from. I was wondering if people with Australian backgrounds do the opposite so that they can have a proper hot Christmas like they’re used to having at home.

That’s a good question, I’d be nested to hear their answers. I wouldn’t, the concept of a white Christmas is novel enough to me that I would just celebrate in December and honestly Christmas in cold weather/snow is still in the public conception with the decorations down here. We still put up a tree with snow themed decorations, even though it’s just about the hottest time of the year.

As an Australian, I’m only familiar with customs in Australia. Do they celebrate Christmas in July in Lesotho, Madagascar, or Argentina?

In argentina/uruguay christmas is celebrated in december and has the stupid winter shit even though it’s the middle of summer. It’s concerning for the old people dressing up as santa in full winter garb for kids.
