  Holy crap.

  I see the headline and I’m thinking… well, all countries would vote for that, except for the US, Israel, because of course, and well, Ukraine probably wouldn’t want to vote because yes or no will anger allies.

  The sanctions stay basically only because of Florida having been a battleground state and Cuban immigrants being a significant voting bloc

  I’m not sure why they bother with the vote. Everyone else trades and vacations in Cuba. U.S. doesn’t. Life goes on.

    The issue is that the USD is the main trade currency in the world, and all transactions in USD need to be cleared by banks in the US. Since Cuba is banned from trading in USD, they need to trade directly in their import/export partners home currency, which exposes them to additional currency fluctuations, and complicates the whole settlement process.

    UN isn’t a world government.

    Someone is gonna have to enforce it.

    Who is willing to send a navy? Anyone? Yea that’s what really matters. UN votes are just performative.

    The split up of votes is crazy accurate. 2 shithole countries doing vile things want to keep oppressing another, Ukraine is too busy with their own shit, and everyone else is just trying to keep the peace.

      I think there may be more to Ukraine’s abstention than being “too busy with their own shit,” probably they don’t want to annoy the US govt and risk having military aid further reduced.
