It’s a service mostly used to download torrents “safely”, one of the use cases being to pair it with something like Kodi as a free netflix alternative. Either way it’s, afaik, mostly used to download torrents faster and with less hassle.

Also, it doesn’t work anymore, don’t get real debrit, all debrit or any form of debrit. They were axed by the french government
olicvb@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
I’ve had been using realDebrid until the french gov. axed them. Last I checked it seems to still be viable for Kodi streaming. Premiumize.me works just as good as an alternative for direct downloads from hosting sites at least
Gerudo@lemm.ee 1 day ago
I have been using realdebrid for Kodi and downloads. Select Kodi addons still work perfectly fine for me to this day.

It’s a French company that you pay a small amount of money to use their service to access perfectly legal and open source content, and not anything resembling pirated movies and TV shows. If your son is using it to view pirated TV shows, that would be very bad and against their instructions for how to use their service. However, it is possible that this is what he is doing.

As I’ve understood, it offers the ability to download files from different ‘one-click’ hosting platforms at ‘premium’ speed without having to pay for ‘premium’ at each platform individually.

Search “stremio torrentio real debrid” to understand.

Sounds like a scam to me, ‘cause all downloads are at ‘the best of your internet speed’ unless you’re doing something on your end to throttle it. Reminds me of the bullshit ‘Monster Cable’ thing from the early 2000s, it was basically an expensive ethernet cable that purported to somehow increase your internet speeds. Yeah, bad ethernet cables can reduce your internet speed, but only over longer runs (unless the shielding is visibly damaged or whatever), but this thing was only 6’ long so it was just a regular ass cat5 cable with a fancy paint-job that costs twice what a regular old 6’ patch cable would. This seems like the bullshit software version of that.

People recommend it for netflix “alternatives” if they don’t want to deal with usenet or secure their torrenting. Its basically for script kiddie pirates
Album@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
It’s more than that. Media plays instantly because it’s already downloaded, cached and served over https. No waiting for files to finish.
libra00@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Wow, I haven’t heard the term ‘script kiddie’ since I used to hang out on alter.net/#hack on IRC back in the 90s.

As someone who has used it for viewing legal copyright free content and nothing pirated, I will say that it definitely provides a service that regular torrents don’t- ease and speed. It makes viewing legal and copyright free content just as easy as using Netflix to the point where you don’t have to go onto various websites looking for what you want to watch, you can just get it all in one place. Further, if you have roommates or relatives who would like to view this legal and copyright free content as well, it’s easy enough for them to use as well without having to learn how to find and download said content. I have done both, and I must say that the fee is well worth it to me compared to the amount of time it saves.

You’re right that downloads already should go to your max bandwidth, but the problem comes that most hosting sites only allow up to a certain speed unless you pay. RealDebrid (and other debrid services) gives you the premium speeds from alot of these providers for very cheap.
I can download from mega or 1fichier at max speeds and without being throttled for only around 11$
libra00@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Oh, interesting. Fair enough, that seems like a useful service then.

Chances are, your son is a pirate, and not a particularly smart one. Late last year, that site got into trouble with the French government and started throwing their customers under the bus. They even publicly leaked some users’ info in response to negative comments.

I have no idea, but that website is a bit of a red flag to me.
It sounds like it’s some sort of file sharing service. So you can upload, share and download files from the RealDebrid servers.
A quick Google suggests it’s primarily used for downloading/streaming movies, TV series etc. Essentially piracy.olicvb@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
It’s legit. It’s got many uses, but it’s mostly used to direct download Torrents, they keep the torrent files on their servers so others can direct download. You can also use it to download from many hosting sites as if you had premium on them, so no more throttling or download limits.

Pretty much a direct link downloader from torrent sites. They download the content, then provide direct download links to the user, which could make access to these files much easier for various integrations (most notably, Kodi).
