I’m more upset the racists were left in large enough numbers to retake the government.

Wait, why is it racist to hate some general?

They’re all tools of the state, and perfectly valid to hate

Sherman used brutal tactics to break the confederacy morale, including the burning of Atlanta. So, someone opposing Sherman because they’re racist is someone who thinks the confederacy was actually a good thing. Cause, ya know, they’re racist. Or very stupid. But, I repeat myself.

I still don’t think that hating a general that would destroy civilian infrastructure and lives is a racist thing.

Defeating the Confederacy wasn’t a one man project. Other generals did their part, without the brutality or wanton destruction. Dude committed a war crime, by modern standards. It’s perfectly reasonable to hate him as much as it is to hate Rommel, or Hannibal.

I didn’t know who William Sherman was till about a minute ago. If he did slaughter the buffalo, is it too late to hate him?

General Sherman was the general that led a Union army through the Confederacy during the US Civil War. The army burned a mile (~1.7 kilometers) wide path across several states.

He hated slavery and slavers, and his actions to defeat the Confederacy made him a hero for the Union.

With the current climate in the US, his actions during the Civil War have made him sort of a folk hero again.

As this meme points out, he was, by no means, a good person. Just a tool of state violence who happened to be used to do something positive.

It’s like praising a hammer that built a house for orphans then finding out it was used to kill homeless persons.

I first read this as William Shatner and was incredibly upset at first, then severely confused for the last half.

Shatner is a notorious bison-hater. Very well known for that. Even had it written into Kirk’s character. Some of the earliest Star Trek lore.

The father of your triple grandmother killed the buffaloes. Prepare to die!
