Comment on An old excuse
realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 2 days agoPeople’s moral compass got seriously screwed over the past couple years. They hate america so much that they think every enemy of america is literally the reincarnation of jesus christ.

It’s really strange. I believe war is bad and the ends don’t justify the means, but the Iranian regime needs to be replaced. Both are true at the same time. There must have been a way to affect that change without violence, but I don’t know what that way is.
Trump is terrible, but that doesn’t make the Ayatollah good.
Now I’m rambling.
captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Exactly, he needed to be replaced, but it needed to be done in a way that creates a stable and free Iran with the capacity to exert its own will. This is just a repeat of Afghanistan but somehow dumber

It’s that silly all-or-nothing thinking. Just because America, Israel and Western vassals are objectively THE main world villains of the past few decades (and Western Europe before that, but that’s a different convo) doesn’t mean that everyone they attacked were saints, lol.

It’s very hard for me to understand how russia is not on that list in the first spot ngl.
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Yeah, Russia, the country that invaded, couped and otherwise subjugated the majority of the world, the country with almost countless military bases around the world, the country of Native genocide, chattle slavery, gunboat diplomacy, three letter agency destabilisation, etc etc. You’re dipped head to toe in propaganda, my friend, you just don’t know it but today you can begin to learn. So no, there’s no comparison, the closest American historical peers are the British and French empires, and then Rome, I guess.

the country that invaded, couped and otherwise subjugated the majority of the world
Correct. That one. The chechen wars, the georgian wars, the war for transnistria, the invasion of ukraine … and that is not even mentioned all their support in the middle east.
the country with almost countless military bases around the world
Yes. True aswell.
While america certainly has more, let’s not pretend that russia has little or even none. They have a heavy military presence in africa, the middle east and the occupied regions south of russia.
the country of Native genocide
My man, after the georgian wars, there has been an ethnic cleansing of georgians in the affected regions, most noteably abkhazia and ossetia. Now, I don’t know the total numbers and could only find total death tolls, but it’s still an ethnic cleansing on a large scale.
gunboat diplomacy
True, russia isn’t doing that - because they are just straightup invading the country instead.
three letter agency destabilisation
Yes, the FSB (the direct successor of the KGB) is certainly not engaging in any destabilization around the world. They would never bomb their own people and blame chechen insurgents for it so they can break the peace treaty and attack again … ah wait. That’s exactly what they did.
You’re dipped head to toe in propaganda
Nah. I know exactly that america is a shitty country, especially under trump. But when putting all their misdeeds side by side and looking at it from a neutral point of view, russia has been way more harmful to the world than america. That does not mean that america has been a net-positive btw - both are shit. But russia is way worse.

Complains there’s no nuance anymore.

Provides the second least nuanced take ever.
ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 1 day ago
How come? If that position had to be taken by anyone, who would you place there besides the usual suspects I just mentioned? It still doesn’t make Saddam someone who might see Heaven, at least IMO…
moakley@lemmy.world 1 day ago
If we’re only looking at the bad things a country has done, committing actual genocide is worse than destabilizing governments and overthrowing dictators.
But you’re also ignoring the good things. The US has historically provided around one third of all humanitarian aid in the world. And while it may be the perfect example of democracy, it has used its power to keep much worse regimes in check.
Saying that America is “objectively THE main world villain” is just silly. Like, you think North Korea is morally superior? Seriously? Or Russia?

Believing Saddam is in heaven would require believing in some sort of god/afterlife/good place vs bad place, and I assure you the vast majority of people who make satirical memes commenting on the United States once again using the excuse of “WMDs!” don’t believe in that. This is gallows humor, grim laughter at being fed the same bullshit time and time again. It’s the by-product of burnout when the regime changes but the narrative remains the same.
What has happened in America (and globally) is that digital interfacing has removed all the nuance, non-verbal, and tonal clues that would clue others in that satire is not endorsement. It relies on the belief that the listener/reader is literate enough to understand that what is being offered is not meant to be taken at face value. It can be true that Saddam was a piece of shit and that it wasn’t America’s place to take him out under false pretenses. I wouldn’t shed a tear if the mango turd got sent to Hell (metaphorically, since I don’t believe in Hell), but I would still be perturbed if his ticket was checked by some foreign nation that I knew didn’t actually give a fuck about me and my community or what came next for us.
realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 2 days ago
A few years ago, I would have agreed with that statement. But I’ve read people on lemmy unironically saying “Hitler was at least sorta right” and so I just can’t really believe that anymore.
backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 1 day ago
If you know it’s being said unironically than you know it’s not satire, it’s just endorsement.
