I’m thinking more of a lure, have some nice rotten salmon smell leaking out of your “hat” and hope that some tasty fish, sharks or seals show up looking for a meal.

IIRC Orcas are one of the species that does shit that appears to have no biological advantage. Other species of dolphins do too.
Dolphins as a whole have some really creative behaviors, especially in social circles. And it appears that they do these things “for the hell of it.”

Do they eat salmon? Maybe they are signaling to the humans that their ships and garbage are killing off their food.
