That’s in Italy (Milan) and it is due to lack of public funds to pay for monument restoration.
- Comment on Just knowing Lemmy is here makes me feel better 6 months ago:
Same, its existence gives me a little of hope even in the toughest moments. I don’t care if people aren’t always nice/polite, you have to deal with it IRL or on any online platform.
Lemmy has always been a sort of “cure” for me, listening to different people’s opinions and learning something new or a new perspective on things every day.
- Comment on Italian government accused of using defamation law to silence intellectuals 6 months ago:
The party is called “Fratelli d’Italia” (lit. “brothers of Italy”) so no one is surprised the President’s brother-in-law is a Minister too. 😂
What is happening against journalists, writers, magistrates and anyone who tries to express criticism “in the name of public safety” is interesting because it would not be normally acceptable under normal conditions in a western democracy.
Unfortunately, the seeds of this started before the current alt-right government. It’s shocking that they are systematically being used now for political reasons but once there is a crack in the system it’s normal someone will try to exploit it to their own benefit.
- Comment on Would lemmy benefit of implementing Polls? 6 months ago:
Personally, I would be in favor of having polls because I frequently involve people in taking decisions.
But my use case is quite peculiar because (1) I need to know people’s opinion to take actions based on it, they would not be just informative polls (2) this group of people use Lemmy as their main interaction medium, no other platform is involved.
I’ve resorted to strawpoll in the past or in having comments with multiple options and relying on the most upvoted comment but these solutions have downsides.

Italy is doing something similar but deporting them to Albania, source here. Being in the EU, the whole thing is even more infuriating (to me).
- Comment on German state gov. ditching Windows for Linux, 30K workers migrating 6 months ago:
Hope it goes better than in Münich, though
In 2003, Munich announced it would be moving some 14,000 PCs off Windows and to Linux. In 2013, the LiMux project finished, but high associated costs and user dissatisfaction resulted in Munich announcing in 2017 that it would spend the next three years reverting back to Windows.

EU rulers value stability no matter what, even if it costs repression on dissent. It seems more and more like Huxley’s dystopia: Community, Identity, Stability.

I’m arriving too late, in any case if you are logged and you are in a community screen, the create post option is in the floating action button “+” in the bottom right corner.
- Comment on English may be a hot mess but at least we don't have to worry about this nonsense 8 months ago:
In Italian too “la lavatrice”. And the dishwasher too, “la lavastoviglie”. btw we have gender fluid nouns like “the table” = “il tavolo” / “la tavola” with slightly different usage patterns.
Italian and Spanish are easier than French because the final -o (masculine) or -a (feminine) usually give a hint, with a few expections you have to learn by heart (“la mano” meaning “the hand” in both languages for example)…
- Comment on ifn't 9 months ago:
I personally have a gut feeling of rejection for every language having the
unless
keyword. This is why I hardly know any PERL and Ruby for example.I have mixed feelings towards Kotlin’s
takeUnless
scope function (I nearly always usetakeIf
with a negated predicate) because my mind forgets the unless version exists. - Comment on Bonjour, je m'appelle Jesus 10 months ago:
I received a strong catholic education, the red and blue are symbols for the blood and water that came out from Jesus side when he was pierced by a Roman soldier, John 19:34
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
- Comment on Is there any Lemmy app/client that allows you to comment from a different account? 11 months ago:
Most apps support multi-account but I think what the OP is asking for is the ability to switch account just for replying on a post/comment and for that reply only or when composing a post in a community, while continuing to use the main account afterwards.

As long as you have the Play Store installed and you access with a Google account, yes you can (just send me the email so that I can invite you).

Unfortunately it is Android-only (for now, at least), I’m sorry. It is developed with multiplatform technologies (KMP and Compose multiplatform) but I’ve focused on Android and the iOS counterpart definitely needs more work. It is open source though, so if anyone wants to help and experiment it’s more than welcome.

Wonder when Lollobrigida is going to ban smoking btw…
- Comment on Italy bans cultivated meat products 11 months ago:
Lab-grown meat is equated to synthetic ingredients and ultra-processed foods which are known to raise health problems (but are not banned, not all additives at least and not everywhere).
Considering how politics goes these days, the producers of cultivated meat just hadn’t a grip on the ministry as strong as the farmer lobby. No ideological or public health reason whatsoever. And it’s not Italy, it’s just politics and business everywhere.
Today it’s Italy’s turn, maybe tomorrow someone else will be on the hot seat.
