I traded episodes with someone once. I would watch some lower decks and she would watch some TNG. I found Lower Decks cynical and obnoxious, so I went with examples of the aspirational mood that I admired from TNG.

Measure of a Man puts treating someone as a person and with dignity should be more important than the utility (the researcher wanting to study Data), reasonableness (Riker’s proof that Data wasn’t alive), or personal feelings and relationships (Picard and the judge’s history).

Darmok is the Federation on a small scale. Seeking understanding even when that comes with risk, even in situations that seem hostile. Silicon Avatar does the same with a sharper contrast, but it doesn’t have all the memes.

The person I traded with understood from those why I didn’t like Lower Decks and really enjoyed the episodes. I don’t think it was enough to get her to watch more, but I’m still satisfied with having shown someone those two.

Of course Grave of the Fireflies. Kiki’s Delivery Service gets to me in a very different way.

Live action adaptation is the best we got.

Trek has always been this way. In TNG, Data takes over the Enterprise singlehandedly to go see his dad. In the Darmok episode, they just beam Picard away. There are Q episodes. There’s the spinning disk metaphor for drugs episode.

Maybe it’s not the most reasonable on every single plot point, but it also spans a wide range of topics, genres, level of seriousness, etc. The point of Measure of a Man isn’t that the full legal system of the Federation is explained in a consistent way. The point of Darmok isn’t to do an audit of the security system.

If you can’t get past the points that are less than perfect to get to the points that are important, it may not be the show for you. Maybe try watching a few with the idea of looking for what’s important instead of trying to find what’s wrong and see how that goes.

Lots of romance anime are high school, beach episode, culture festival, fireworks, class trip, entrance exams. If I’m out of better stuff, I’ll put up with it. I was realizing the other day watching one that I thought was more complex simply because different characters had different motivations. It’s such a low bar at this point.

Shonen just all are making a different system for power creep to happen. I tend to stay away from them as it’s just not interesting. Hunter x Hunter is an example that started off decently but then introduced nen and types of users and just escalates from there. The Bomber guy was just the worst with his convoluted rules during Greed Island arc.

Unsafe could mean, for an examples I have seen on steam forums, that minorities get harassed or told they should be exterminated. Just like Nazis should be scared to be in public IRL, they shouldn’t have safe spaces online either.

I know by your language you already have your mind made up and probably have a real strong opinion on ethics in gaming journalism, but extremism is a real problem.
