- Comment on Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone 6 months ago:
Oh yea, I tried that too, nope, just simply can't compare. That's why Adobe still gets my money as much as I don't want to give it to them. Luckily the Photography plan hasn't increased in price... yet.
- Comment on Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone 6 months ago:
I'll still be using Windows (no time for Linux), but really, why does the user have to do this for a pleasant experience? MS shouldn't be hostile towards their users.
- Comment on Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone 6 months ago:
Yea, that was my take as well. Try RawTherapee, they said. Nope, inferior, there were some photos where I could spot them in full-screen view, not even at 100%.
- Comment on Biden expected to sign the TikTok ban on Wed. 6 months ago:
Don't forget, control the sale of data too. Audits etc to make sure they comply with privacy safeguards, and so on.
This is just pandering as well as, I suspect, to give a corporate donor a profit-making business.
- Comment on Microsoft sets 16GB default for RAM for AI PCs – machines will also need 40 TOPS of AI compute: Report 9 months ago:
Great, so it'll take AI to set 16GB as minimum.
I still shudder that there are machines still being sold with 8GB RAM, that's just barely enough.

This is why I don't like the Fediverse as much. Can you believe that loon got so many upvotes? Describes the average mentality around these parts, what a turn off.
- Comment on Samsung is no longer the world’s biggest smartphone maker 10 months ago:
I'm sure there'll only be people who read the headlines, so here's what's going on:
Overall shipments decreased by 40 million, but there were two companies who made gains within the top 5: Apple, who shipped 8 million units more, and Transsion, who shipped 22 million units more. Samsung dropped 40 million units, similar to the overall shipments. Looks like Transsion made the most of it during this dip, taking away marketshare from other Android phone makers.

I didn't realise it, I just pasted the link and let Kbin figure out the data. I guess it read from an internal working title instead of the actual title (which isn't much better, it's "The Perfect Webpage")
I do feel like this is why I don't really hang around the fediverse that much; it's like the opposite end of the spectrum of right-wingers who go nuts when "communism" or "socialism" is mentioned, just that it's any mention of "capitalism". Kneejerk reactions either way.
- Comment on How Google perfected the web 10 months ago:
Sounds great; yea, I'm getting sick of the shitty SEOed the hella out results I'm getting from Google search nowadays. If I'm searching for anything that's not pure facts (which likely leads me to a wiki page anyway), it's just going to be a shitshow of bland pages as described in the linked article.

Yes, I really do love the animations, really shows the transformation so well.
- Comment on How Google perfected the web 10 months ago:
Yes, that's why before Reddit went to shit we all added "reddit" to the search terms. I do miss the old web a lot.
- Comment on How Google perfected the web 10 months ago:
The animations showing the transformation of a page into a blah-SEO clone really sold the article for me. Really reminds me of how shitty the "modern" web is nowadays. I also think it's time I signed up for Kagi.

This is me. Saw a cool keycap set the other day, and before I knew it BOOM! New keyboard.
I only have 4 (working ones) so far, but that's still probably one too many. xD

I use the app/menu all the time in Excel.
- Comment on Microsoft is adding a new key to PC keyboards for the first time since 1994 10 months ago:
Two keys, and they've actually been useful. This one, errrrrrrr, not so much. Copilot is barely baked, if you ask me,
- Comment on Microsoft is adding a new key to PC keyboards for the first time since 1994 10 months ago:
Mine's set to the Application/Menu key on tap, and as a Fn modifier when held, so the WASD keys act as the arrows, Q and E as PageUp/Down, and R and F as Home and End. It's gotten so convenient I do that subconciously on keyboards that don't do that, and I end up with SSSSSSSSS or EEEEEEEEEEE.

That's a ridiculous take, can't believe it has so many upvotes. The Verge has staff on Mastodon for a while now.

Yea, this is a USA problem. Elsewhere everyone just uses a messaging app of their network's choice.
- Comment on Will Microsoft drop the TPM requirement for Win 11 once Win 12 rolls around? 11 months ago:
Damn, some sense around these parts. Always felt the TPM issue was overblown. Unless you wanted Win11 on day 1, and no sensible user should be doing that anyway!

Unlike a lot of "you" problems, it's not that easy to change. I doubt migrating over a phone is a good idea.
- Comment on Headteachers in England tell of worsening behaviour of pupils – and parents 11 months ago:
I'm sure this isn't just a UK problem, I'm sure many countries are reporting worsening behaviour in parents, which filters down to the children. I know it's been a problem for a while where I am!

Same, Valve needs to get the international distributorship rolling!
- Comment on Nothing Phone builds a blue bubble iMessage bridge while Google and Apple fight over RCS 1 year ago:
Wife's Nothing(1) seems just fine. My only issue with the design is how it acts like an echo chamber for the haptic motor. It actually is quite noisy at the higher settings.

Not familiar with the tech, but wouldn't server-side LLMs still have an advantage regardless because of the greater power available on tap? Anything that improves local LLM will also benefit server-side LLMs, wouldn't it?
